UPI Server Down Today: Online Payment Service Disruptions Hit Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and Other UPI Apps

On Saturday, a major outage in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has left many users across India unable to complete online payments. Although the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI operations, has not yet resolved the issue, users are reporting difficulties in transferring money and checking their account balances. The problem caused havoc for many people who rely on UPI for regular transactions including local shopping, bill payments, and money transfers.

PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay and Other UPI Apps Down

Since the errors occur in both bank accounts and UPI apps, it seems that the issue is related to UPI servers. Popular UPI apps like PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, Cred, and others have been impacted by the outage. For certain banks, multiple users can still view their account balance, but not all users can access the payments.

UPI Down

NPCI admitted the problem On X (previously known as Twitter) and stated that "partial" UPI transaction declines were caused by random technical difficulties. It said, "NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused."

Several users turned to social media and outage tracking tools to complain that prominent apps such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay were down. The outage was widely covered on social media and tracked in real time by monitoring websites.

Downdetector, a website that monitors internet service issues, saw a dramatic spike in complaints as a result of the disturbance. Around 1:00 PM, the site reports that there were over 2,300 reports at its peak. Approximately 81% of users reported having trouble making payments, 17% reported having trouble transferring money, and 2% reported having trouble completing purchases. Users from several banks and platforms were impacted by the outage, which suggested a more extensive network issue with the UPI infrastructure.

UPI Server Down Twice in a Month

UPI services had faced a disruption last month as well. Users were unable to access UPI functionalities for up to three hours on March 26 due to a major outage. Back then, the NPCI had acknowledged the issue on X (formerly Twitter) and resolved it within a few hours.

The outage comes shortly after the NPCI announced new guidelines on April 8 for international UPI transactions. The changes restrict the use of QR codes for cross-border payments to improve payer identification. However, domestic UPI transaction limits remain unchanged. While the new rules aim to boost security, they also underline the evolving nature of the UPI ecosystem as it adapts to global digital payment trends.

About UPI Service and Its Functionalities

The NPCI which functions under the direction of the Reserve Bank of India, developed a quick payment system known as UPI or Unified Payments Interface. Through mobile apps, consumers can immediately transfer money across bank accounts without incurring any fees from NPCI.

In India, UPI is a widely used real-time payment system that enables quick and easy money transfers between bank accounts. The UPI service allows customers to pay bills and make purchases online without disclosing their bank account information to the business, in addition to facilitating smooth money transfers. Additionally, UPI enables consumers to pay merchants using Rupay Credit Cards and set up AutoPay for their subscription services. The service is popular for making minor purchases at nearby stores because it is totally free and has no minimum transaction amount.
