In a bid to revitalize its tourism sector and bolster economic recovery, Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a game-changing move during his People's Justice Party congress on Sunday. Effective December 1, citizens of China and India will enjoy visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days.
This significant decision follows in the footsteps of neighbouring Thailand, which has implemented similar measures to jumpstart its tourism industry and stimulate economic growth, with Chinese and Indian nationals also benefiting from visa exemptions this year.
China and India, Malaysia's fourth and fifth-largest source markets, will see a surge in tourism with this newfound accessibility. The visa-free policy is expected to attract a substantial number of visitors, given the historical tourism statistics.

Government data reveals that Malaysia welcomed 9.16 million tourists between January and June this year, marking a stark contrast from the pandemic-ridden 2019 period when only 1.5 million tourists from China and 3,54,486 from India visited the country.
Currently, Chinese and Indian nationals are required to apply for visas to enter Malaysia. However, this policy shift aims to streamline the entry process, making it more convenient for travellers from these countries to explore Malaysia's diverse attractions.
While Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim did not specify the duration of the visa exemption, the move is anticipated to boost tourism figures, injecting vitality into Malaysia's hospitality and service industries.
As the nation takes this bold step to welcome tourists with open arms, eyes are on the potential economic impact and the positive ripple effect on various sectors that depend on tourism for their livelihoods.
