Maldives Plans Road Shows in India to Revive Tourism Interest

In a strategic move to attract Indian tourists, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has announced plans to conduct roadshows across major Indian cities. This decision comes in the wake of a noticeable decline in the number of Indian visitors to the Maldives, prompting MATATO to engage in discussions with India's High Commissioner in the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, aimed at boosting travel and tourism cooperation between the two nations.

Maldives Bid to Boost Indian Tourism

The need for such measures was highlighted following a significant backlash against the Maldives after derogatory comments about India and its Prime Minister Narendra Modi were made by three Maldivian officials on social media. The controversy erupted after Modi shared images and a video of the Lakshadweep Islands on January 6. The fallout saw many Indians, including celebrities, cancelling their trips to the Maldives, leading to a drop in tourism from India from a top position to sixth place as of April 10 this year.

According to the latest statistics from the Maldives' Ministry of Tourism, out of 663,269 tourists who visited the Maldives up until April 10, China leads with 71,995 tourists, followed by the United Kingdom, Russia, Italy, Germany, and India with 37,417 tourists. In response to this downturn, MATATO has expressed its commitment to closely collaborate with the Indian High Commission in the Maldives to enhance tourism initiatives.

Plans are underway for comprehensive roadshows in key Indian cities and for organizing influencer and media familiarization trips to the Maldives in the coming months. MATATO emphasizes India's importance as a vital tourist market and is keen on partnering with prominent travel associations and industry stakeholders in India to promote the Maldives as a leading travel destination.

The association views its meeting with the Indian High Commissioner as a significant step towards strengthening tourism ties between the Maldives and India. This collaboration is expected to lead to transformative collaborations that will drive sustainable growth in the region's tourism sector.

This initiative follows a period of diplomatic tension between the two countries. Shortly after taking office last November, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu requested India withdraw its 88 military personnel from the country, citing concerns over sovereignty. Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, has stated that no Indian military personnel will be present in the Maldives after May 10, following the repatriation of all 88 personnel.
