The Union Cabinets approval of mandatory packaging norms for Jute Year 2023-24 aims to support domestic production, benefitting workers and farmers. The norms require 100% of foodgrains and 20% of sugar to be packed in jute bags, aligning with the Aatmnirbhar Bharat initiative.
In a significant move, the Union Cabinet of India has approved mandatory packaging norms for Jute Year 2023-24. This decision aims to provide relief to the jute industry and support the livelihoods of millions of people associated with it. The new norms mandate that 100% of foodgrains and 20% of sugar must be compulsorily packed in jute bags.
Impact on Jute Industry and Farmers
The decision is expected to positively impact the jute industry, which has been facing challenges in recent years. It is estimated that around 4 lakh workers employed in jute mills and ancillary units, as well as approximately 40 lakh farm families, will benefit from this move. The reservation norms will protect the domestic production of raw jute and jute packaging material, thereby promoting self-reliance in line with the government's Aatmnirbhar Bharat initiative.
Environmental Benefits
In addition to supporting the jute industry, the mandatory packaging norms also align with India's sustainability goals. Jute is a natural, biodegradable, renewable, and reusable fiber that meets all sustainability parameters. By promoting the use of jute bags, the government aims to reduce the environmental impact associated with synthetic packaging materials.
Jute's Role in Foodgrain Packaging
The jute industry primarily produces jute sacking bags, with around 75% of its total production dedicated to this purpose. Of these bags, 85% are supplied to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and State Procurement Agencies, while the remaining are exported or sold directly. The central government procures jute sacking bags worth approximately Rs 12,000 crore annually for packing foodgrains, ensuring a guaranteed market for jute farmers and workers.
The approval of mandatory packaging norms for Jute Year 2023-24 is a significant step towards supporting the jute industry and promoting sustainable practices. By mandating the use of jute bags for foodgrains and sugar, the government aims to provide relief to the jute sector, protect the environment, and ensure the well-being of millions of people associated with the industry.
