Manohar Lal Khattar Appointed as Union Power Minister Amidst Challenges

In a significant reshuffle within the Union Cabinet, Manohar Lal Khattar, a seasoned RSS pracharak and Haryana's former chief minister, has been appointed as the new Power Minister. This announcement was made official on Friday, marking a pivotal shift in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Khattar steps into the shoes of R.K. Singh, who faced defeat in the recent elections from Arrah, Bihar. Alongside Khattar, Shripad Yesso Naik, victorious in the Lok Sabha election from North Goa, has been designated as the Minister of State for Ministries of Power and New & Renewable Energy.

Khattar Becomes Union Power Minister

With this new role, Khattar is tasked with addressing critical challenges such as the surging power demand and coal supply constraints that power producers nationwide are grappling with. The power sector's demand reached a record high of 250 GW in May this year, closely approaching the projected peak demand of 260 GW during the summer season. Ensuring adequate coal supply to all power stations across the country necessitates Khattar's close collaboration with the ministries of coal and railways. Despite India's significant stride towards renewable energy, coal-based thermal power continues to be a staple for the national grid.

Khattar's political journey is notable, having defeated Divyanshu Budhiraja of the Indian National Congress in Karnal during the latest general election. His political career began in earnest in 2014 when he was elected MLA and subsequently became Haryana's Chief Minister, a position he held until March 2024 before being succeeded by Nayab Singh Saini. Known for his close ties with Prime Minister Modi since their work together in the BJP during the 1990s, Khattar has had a long-standing commitment to the party and its ideologies.

Born in 1954 in Nindana, Haryana, to a family that migrated from Pakistan post-partition, Khattar has an agricultural background. His tenure as Haryana's Chief Minister was marked by both achievements and controversies. He introduced reforms such as pre-qualification conditions for panchayat election candidates and launched the Parivar Pehchan Patra scheme for unique family identification. However, his administration faced criticism over its handling of various social unrests, including the Jat quota stir and protests against farm laws.

Despite these challenges, Khattar maintained a reputation for promoting transparent recruitment processes and fostering cordial relations with allies like the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), although this alliance ended following his departure from the Chief Minister's office. Reflecting on his tenure and subsequent transition, Khattar expressed contentment over recommending Nayab Saini's name to Prime Minister Modi as his successor, highlighting it as a moment of personal fulfillment.

As Manohar Lal Khattar embarks on his new journey within the Union Cabinet, his extensive experience and strategic approach are anticipated to bring about significant developments in India's power sector amidst growing demands and challenges.
