Manohar Lal Khattar Appointed as Union Power Minister Amidst Challenges

In a significant reshuffle within the Union Cabinet, Manohar Lal Khattar, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and a seasoned RSS pracharak, has been appointed as the new Power Minister. This announcement was made official on Monday, marking a new chapter in Khattar's extensive political career. He steps into the role previously held by R.K. Singh, who did not secure his seat in the recent elections from Arrah, Bihar.

Khattar New Power Minister

Alongside Khattar, Shripad Yesso Naik, victorious in the Lok Sabha election from North Goa, has been designated as the Minister of State for the Ministries of Power and New & Renewable Energy. This reshuffle comes at a time when India's power sector is grappling with critical challenges such as surging power demand and coal supply constraints that affect power producers nationwide.

The country's power demand reached an all-time high of 250 GW in May this year, closely approaching the Power Ministry's summer season projection of 260 GW. With many power plants operating below the recommended coal stock levels, Khattar's immediate task will involve ensuring a steady supply of coal to all power stations across India. This will necessitate close collaboration with both the Ministries of Coal and Railways.

Despite the significant growth in renewable energy capacity, which now exceeds 190 GW—including large hydro projects—coal-based thermal power continues to be the backbone of India's electricity supply. Khattar's appointment is seen as crucial in maintaining this balance while steering the country towards its renewable energy goals.

Khattar's political journey is notable for his close association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi since the 1990s and his significant role in Haryana's politics. Born in 1954 in Nindana, Haryana, to a family that migrated from Pakistan post-partition, Khattar has been a lifelong RSS pracharak before venturing into active politics with the BJP.

His tenure as Haryana's Chief Minister was marked by several controversies but also by initiatives aimed at improving governance and transparency. Notably, his government introduced pre-qualification conditions for panchayat election candidates and launched the Parivar Pehchan Patra scheme to provide unique family identities.

Despite facing criticism over handling various social unrests and partnering with Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) to secure a majority in his second term as CM, Khattar was appreciated for maintaining a stable alliance until his departure from the CM's office in March 2024. His removal was part of a strategic move, suggested by Khattar himself to Prime Minister Modi over a year ago, emphasizing his belief in passing leadership for greater good.

As Khattar embarks on his new role within the Union Cabinet, his vast experience and strategic approach are expected to address the pressing issues facing India's power sector effectively. His appointment underscores a pivotal shift towards addressing both immediate operational challenges and long-term sustainability goals in India's energy landscape.
