New Delhi, Mar 21 - In a significant disclosure by the Election Commission on Thursday, Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) emerged as the second-largest purchaser of electoral bonds, directing the highest donation of approximately Rs 586 crore to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The company, known for securing major infrastructure projects including the esteemed Zojila tunnel deal, has ventured into diverse sectors such as city gas distribution and media ownership in recent years. According to the data, MEIL has made substantial donations across the political spectrum, purchasing electoral bonds worth a total of Rs 966 crore.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), previously recognized as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and until recently the ruling party in Telangana, received Rs 195 crore from MEIL. The firm's political contributions also extended to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Tamil Nadu's ruling party, with donations amounting to Rs 85 crore. Additionally, the YSR Congress Party led by Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh was allocated Rs 37 crore. Other beneficiaries include the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with about Rs 25 crore, the Congress with Rs 17 crore, and smaller sums ranging from Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore were donated to the JD-S, Jana Sena Party, and JD-U.
MEIL's engagement in electoral bond purchases spanned from the financial years 2019-20 to 2023-24, totaling Rs 966 crore. This period also saw the company winning the bid for constructing an all-weather road tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 and securing licenses for retailing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and piped cooking gas in select cities. Founded in 1989 by industrialist Pamireddy Pitchi Reddy as Megha Engineering Enterprises, the firm initially focused on manufacturing pipes for municipalities. It underwent a rebranding in 2006 to Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd., marking its expansion into executing large-scale projects encompassing dams, natural gas distribution networks, power plants, and roads.
The financial contributions made by MEIL highlight its significant presence in India's political funding landscape through electoral bonds. This mechanism of political donations has been a subject of debate since its introduction, with proponents arguing it ensures transparency and accountability in political funding. Critics, however, raise concerns about anonymity potentially leading to undue influence over policy decisions. MEIL's diverse portfolio of donations across major political parties underscores the intricate relationship between corporate entities and political financing in India.
