Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) announced the commissioning of five solar power plants in Maharashtra, with a total capacity of 19 megawatts (MW). These plants were inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a statement from MEIL. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM) scheme.

The newly commissioned solar plants are located in Shambhaji Nagar (3 MW), Nanded (5 MW), Kolhapur (3 MW), Akola (3 MW), and Buldhana (5 MW). These facilities aim to provide continuous electricity to farmers, helping reduce their electricity costs. Any surplus power generated will be fed into the grid, enhancing energy distribution.
Solar Energy for Agriculture
Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, MEIL is tasked with developing 404 advanced solar plants across nine districts in Maharashtra, with a combined capacity of 1,880 MW. M. Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer of Renewable Energy at MEIL, highlighted this ambitious project as a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions for agriculture.
The PM-KUSUM initiative, launched by the Government of India in 2019, seeks to promote solar energy use in agriculture. It aims to reduce farmers' reliance on diesel pumps and increase their income through surplus electricity generation. This initiative is expected to transform agricultural practices by integrating renewable energy sources.
Benefits for Farmers
Farmers often face challenges with night-time irrigation due to unreliable power supply. This situation leads to water wastage and poses safety risks such as snake bites and electric shocks. By providing solar panels for irrigation under PM-KUSUM, farmers will have access to reliable day-time power, making irrigation safer and more efficient.
The introduction of these solar plants marks a significant milestone in promoting green energy within the agricultural sector. The project not only supports sustainable farming practices but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions by decreasing dependency on conventional energy sources.
This development underscores India's commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure while addressing the needs of its agricultural community. By harnessing solar power, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable and economically viable future for farmers across Maharashtra.
