Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced a USD 17.5 billion investment to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and skills in India, after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The commitment, described as Microsoft's largest in Asia, positions India at the centre of the company's global AI strategy and long-term technology planning.
The announcement came through a post on X after the meeting at the Prime Minister's residence. Nadella wrote: "Thank you, PM @narendramodi ji, for an inspiring conversation on India's AI opportunity. To support the country's ambitions, Microsoft is committing USD 17.5B - our largest investment ever in Asia - to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India's AI first future," Nadella tweeted.

Microsoft investment and AI in India vision
PM Modi responded on X, describing the interaction with Nadella as productive and forward-looking. "Had a very productive discussion with Mr. Satya Nadella. Happy to see India being the place where Microsoft will make its largest-ever investment in Asia," he tweeted. Modi added, "The youth of India will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet," he said.
Nadella's new pledge follows earlier commitments aimed at making India an "AI-first" nation. During a visit in January, Nadella announced a USD 3 billion Microsoft investment spread over two years. That earlier plan focused on cloud services, AI infrastructure and large-scale skilling programmes across the country's workforce.
As part of that January announcement, Microsoft set a goal to train 10 million Indians in AI-related skills by 2030. The company said a major share of this training would involve participants from Tier-II and Tier-III cities, along with a strong focus on women learners, to widen access to technology jobs.
Digital infrastructure plans and AI in India rollout
A key technology move for India is the proposed launch of Microsoft 365 Copilot with local data processing by the end of 2025. This move is expected to support AI data governance and regulatory compliance inside India, covering sectors such as government, BFSI, and healthcare, which handle sensitive information.
Nadella's four-day visit includes stops in Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, underscoring how important India has become for Microsoft's cloud and AI business. The company continues to expand data centres, developer programmes and enterprise partnerships, as it strengthens links between India and the United States in AI, digital trade and workforce skilling.
Organisation Plan / Investment Key Focus in India
Microsoft USD 17.5B plus earlier USD 3B AI infrastructure, skills, data centres, AI-first strategy
Cognizant Expansion into emerging cities AI adoption, education, equitable talent growth
Intel MoU with Tata Group Semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, AI-PC market
Tech leaders, partnerships and AI in India push
The Prime Minister also met other global technology leaders as India steps up its AI and semiconductor plans. Senior Cognizant executives, including CEO Ravi Kumar S, discussed how to speed up AI adoption across sectors. They also focused on strengthening education and skill development to improve AI capabilities and workplace productivity.
Cognizant described its interaction with PM Modi as an "inspiring conversation". The company added: "Our CEO also reaffirmed to the Prime Minister Cognizant's continued commitment to India and apprised him of our plans to expand into emerging cities to promote equitable growth and talent development," the company said.
Intel Corporation CEO Lip-Bu Tan met PM Modi as the US chipmaker looks to deepen its role in India's semiconductor plans. Intel has signed a MoU with the Tata Group, covering manufacturing, assembly and packaging of Intel-designed products at Tata Electronics's upcoming Fab and OSAT facilities in India.
Semiconductors, AI-PCs and long-term AI in India strategy
The Intel-Tata agreement also includes collaboration on advanced semiconductor packaging within India. With Tata providing manufacturing and packaging capacity, Intel plans to localise crucial parts of its supply chain. This supports India's target of becoming a global semiconductor hub while also meeting growing domestic demand for chips.
The semiconductor partnership aligns with PM Modi's "Make in India for the World" vision, which promotes local production for global markets. Alongside this, Intel is exploring rapid expansion of AI-PC solutions for India's fast-growing consumer and business market, and aims to use India as a significant base in its future technology strategy.
Together, the new Microsoft investment, Cognizant's expansion plans and Intel's semiconductor tie-up highlight how central India has become to global AI and hardware plans. The meetings with PM Modi underline expectations that India's talent, demand and policy support will continue to shape advances in AI and related technologies in the coming years.
