Milk Price Hike: Tamil Nadu Raises Procurement Rate to Rs 44/Litre; Will Milk, Paneer and Sweets Get Costlier?

Tamil Nadu announced a fresh increase in the amount paid to milk producers. The decision comes at a time when rising production expenses are putting pressure on dairy farmers, while households and businesses in different parts of India are already dealing with expensive milk and milk-based products.

Milk Price Hike: Tamil Nadu Raises Milk Procurement Price to Rs 44 Per Litre

The Tamil Nadu government has increased the milk procurement price paid to producers to Rs 44 per litre. The latest revision takes the total increase announced by the state to Rs 6 per litre.

The procurement rate had earlier been raised from Rs 38 to Rs 41 per litre. With the latest decision, dairy farmers supplying milk through the state's organised procurement network are expected to receive improved returns for their produce.

Milk Price Hike

More than 3.16 lakh milk producers are expected to benefit from the government's decision. The state has also increased the incentive provided to milk producers from Rs 3 per litre to Rs 5 per litre.

Government Increased Milk Price for Farmers

Dairy farming has become more expensive as producers face rising costs related to cattle feed, fodder, labour, transportation and animal healthcare.

For small and medium-sized dairy farmers, an increase in production costs can significantly reduce earnings if the price paid for milk remains unchanged. The higher procurement price is intended to offer financial support and encourage farmers to continue supplying milk to the organised dairy system.

However, increasing the price paid to farmers also adds to the financial burden on the state. The government had earlier estimated that the previous procurement price increase would result in an additional expenditure of around Rs 30 crore every month, or Rs 360 crore annually.

Milk Procurement Price vs Retail Price; Will Milk Become Costlier?

The procurement price and retail price of milk are not the same. Farmers receive the procurement price when they sell milk to dairy cooperatives or other collection networks. Consumers, on the other hand, pay the retail price for packaged or loose milk purchased from shops and other outlets.

A rise in the amount paid to farmers does not necessarily result in an immediate increase in retail milk prices. Governments and dairy cooperatives can absorb part of the additional cost. However, if procurement and other operating expenses remain elevated for a prolonged period, there could eventually be pressure on consumer prices.

This creates a difficult balancing act for policymakers. Farmers need reasonable prices to sustain their businesses, while milk must also remain affordable because it is a daily household requirement.

Higher Milk Costs Could Affect Sweets, Paneer and Other Products

A wholesale price increase does not always mean that retail milk prices will rise by the same amount. However, businesses that use large quantities of milk may eventually face higher operating costs.

Sweet shops, bakeries, restaurants, tea stalls and other food businesses depend heavily on milk and dairy products. A sustained increase in their input costs could affect the prices of products such as paneer, curd, sweets, lassi, tea and coffee.
