India Sweden economic cooperation: Modi urges Swedish firms to expand manufacturing and clean energy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on an official visit to Sweden, urged Swedish companies to expand their presence in India across manufacturing, green hydrogen and clean energy. In talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Swedish CEOs, he highlighted India’s reforms, digital public infrastructure and growth. Discussions also covered resilient supply chains and advanced manufacturing.

The comments came during an official visit to Sweden, where Modi met select Swedish chief executives alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Modi linked the outreach to wider economic changes underway in India. Modi spoke about reforms, steady local demand, and expanded manufacturing capacity. Modi also pointed to India’s digital public infrastructure and ongoing work on next-generation infrastructure. Modi said these factors supported India’s fast economic shift.

According to the external affairs ministry, Modi asked Swedish companies to grow their footprint through Make In India. Modi also referred to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the National Critical Mineral Mission. Modi said India offered opportunities across clean energy, defence, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

Modi said India and Sweden shared values that supported stronger cooperation. Modi listed democracy, transparency, innovation and sustainability as common principles. Modi urged businesses to link Swedish capability with India’s large market. Modi also stressed India’s talent base and strong growth momentum.

The talks also covered areas beyond investment plans. Both sides discussed resilient supply chains and the green transition. The agenda included sustainable mobility, life sciences, and digital technologies. The external affairs ministry said the focus was on deeper cooperation across these sectors.

Modi said the two countries were moving past a simple trading model. Modi said India and Sweden were working towards a long term industrial partnership. Modi again underlined linking Swedish innovation with India’s scale. Modi said the aim was to co-create solutions for the 21st century.

Modi also referred to the trade deal between India and the European Union. In January, India and the European Union EU concluded the Free Trade Agreement FTA. At a joint press briefing, Modi said the FTA would help industry, investors and innovators. Modi quoted Ursula von der Leyen calling it "the mother of all deals\".

The meetings in Sweden linked trade, technology and manufacturing priorities. Modi’s remarks placed clean energy and green hydrogen among key areas. The discussions also included supply chains, mobility, life sciences and digital tools. Modi presented India-Sweden ties as shifting towards longer industrial cooperation, supported by the EU FTA.
