Strait of Hormuz Freedom of Navigation Raised in Modi–Pezeshkian Call on West Asia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone call with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on developments in West Asia. Modi welcomed progress in negotiations and reiterated India’s position that disputes should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy. He underlined the importance of freedom of navigation and commerce in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the wider world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday. The Iranian leader shared an update on recent developments in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the understanding reached and stressed that issues should be settled through talks. The Prime Minister’s Office said Prime Minister Modi also underlined regional peace needs steady efforts.

The Prime Minister said the Strait of Hormuz remained important for India and the world. Prime Minister Modi again flagged the need to protect freedom of navigation and commerce. The PMO said Prime Minister Modi also called for continued work towards lasting peace and stability. President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the way forward.

Prime Minister Modi posted a message on X after the call. Prime Minister Modi wrote: "Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World.\"
The PMO statement said Prime Minister Modi welcomed the understanding reached. Prime Minister Modi also repeated India’s position that disputes should be handled through dialogue and diplomacy. The statement added that Prime Minister Modi pressed for ongoing efforts for peace. It also noted the need to safeguard shipping routes and trade through key sea lanes.
Iran burial ceremonies and India representation linked to Strait of Hormuz context
Earlier, President Pezeshkian invited Prime Minister Modi to burial ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceremonies are scheduled for next week. Reports said the government plans to send Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain. Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita is also expected to attend as India’s representative.
The burial ceremonies are set to be held from July 5 to 9. Reports have linked the planned Indian representation to official engagements with Iran. The latest phone call focused on West Asia developments and next steps. The PMO said Prime Minister Modi kept the emphasis on diplomacy, stability, and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
