Monsoon Arrives in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada, Udupi; IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert in Bengaluru Till June 6
The southwest monsoon has officially entered Karnataka, marking the beginning of the state's crucial rainy season and bringing widespread relief from summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Thursday that the monsoon has advanced into parts of coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Monsoon Arrives in Karnataka Via Dakshina Kannada & Udupi: IMD Predicts Rains in Bengaluru, Mysuru & Other Districts
Meteorologists said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to progress further inland over the next few days. The weather system is expected to advance into South Interior Karnataka shortly, bringing rainfall to districts such as Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Ramanagara and Bengaluru.

The Karnataka coast satisfied all meteorological parameters required for the declaration of monsoon onset. Consistent rainfall activity, strengthened southwesterly winds and extensive cloud cover along the coastal belt helped establish monsoon conditions across the region. With the onset now confirmed, weather experts expect rainfall coverage to expand steadily across much of the state.
IMD Weather Forecast: Yellow Alert in Karnataka Until June 10
For coastal Karnataka, the monsoon's arrival has already resulted in a significant increase in rainfall activity. Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are expected to receive heavy showers over the coming days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for these regions until June 10, cautioning residents about intense rainfall, strong winds and possible localised disruptions.
Bangalore Weather Prediction: Yellow Alert Continues as Rain Activity Intensifies
Bengaluru is also likely to witness a spell of wet and windy weather as the monsoon edges closer to South Interior Karnataka. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the city and surrounding districts, warning of intermittent rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail, while wind speeds could reach 40-50 kmph during thunderstorm activity.
Maximum temperatures are likely to remain around 33 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures near 21 degrees Celsius, providing some relief from recent warm conditions.
The changing weather pattern is being driven by multiple atmospheric systems currently active across the country. Cyclonic circulations over parts of Vidarbha, combined with weather disturbances over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, have enhanced moisture flow into Karnataka.
In addition, troughs extending across central and peninsular India are supporting the advance of the southwest monsoon and increasing rainfall potential across the state.
Heavy Rain Alert for Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Kolar and Chikkaballapur Till June 6
Heavy rainfall is expected across several parts of South Interior Karnataka through June 6. Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Kolar and Chikkaballapur are among the districts likely to witness recurring spells of rain and thunderstorms, with isolated locations potentially receiving intense showers.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during periods of heavy rain, particularly during peak commuting hours when waterlogging and traffic disruptions may occur.
The monsoon's progress will also be closely monitored by authorities managing Karnataka's major reservoirs and irrigation networks. Adequate rainfall during the early phase of the season is critical for replenishing storage levels in reservoirs such as Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS), Kabini, Tungabhadra, Hemavathi and Harangi, which support drinking water and agricultural requirements across large parts of the state.
