Monsoon to Hit Kerala by May 27: Yellow Alert Issued for Heavy Rains in Multiple Districts From May 17-20

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the monsoon is expected to grace Kerala by May 27, which is a notable five days ahead of its usual arrival date of June 1 according to the TOI reported. This is a significant shift, as the monsoon's early arrival is expected to have a positive impact on the agricultural cycle in the region.

The southwest monsoon has become active in the southern Bay of Bengal and is expected to reach Kerala by the end of next week. The Central Meteorological Department reported that the monsoon has spread across the southeast Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin region, parts of the Andaman Sea, the Andaman Islands, and the south Bay of Bengal. Despite the monsoon's arrival, Kerala is anticipated to receive heavy rains even before it fully reaches the state.

According to the IMD, this year monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on May 27, 2025. This is earlier than usual. Normally, the monsoon begins on June 1. However, the rain could come a few days earlier or later. It could arrive between May 23 and May 31.

As the monsoon approaches, Kerala will experience increasing cloud cover and scattered rainfall in the days before the anticipated arrival. The weather for the week from May 16 to May 22 will see a gradual increase in cloud formation, with brief spells of rain expected intermittently.

Kerala Temperature Forecast and Weather Prediction: For the period from May 16 to May 22, Kerala's weather is predicted to be cloudy with occasional rain showers. The temperatures are expected to hover around 32°C during the day and 24-25°C during the night, with thunderstorms expected in some areas.

  • May 17: Cloudy conditions with occasional thunderstorms.
  • May 18: Brief morning showers, followed by cloudy skies.
  • May 19: Cloudy skies with rain in the morning and storms in the afternoon.
  • May 20: Light rain expected with thick cloud cover.
  • May 21: Occasional rain with overcast conditions.
  • May 22: Cloudy skies with morning showers.

On May 19, heavy rainfall is expected in the Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, prompting an orange alert in these areas. On May 20, an orange alert will remain in place for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

A yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Malappuram, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rain. On May 17, a yellow alert will be issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki, while on May 18, the alert will extend to Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. For May 19, a yellow alert will be issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. Finally, on May 20, the yellow alert will remain for Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts.

The early arrival of the monsoon is expected to benefit farmers, particularly those involved in the sowing of Kharif or summer-sown crops. Farmers across Kerala will likely be able to start their planting season ahead of schedule, helping them maximise yields and improve crop productivity. Kharif crops like rice, maize, and pulses rely heavily on the early onset of the monsoon to ensure optimal growth.
