Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed optimism about finalising a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a large steel plant in Keonjhar. Majhi emphasised his commitment to this project during discussions with reporters.

MoU for Mega Steel Plant in Keonjhar

Majhi highlighted the district's rich mineral resources, including iron, manganese, chromite, and dolomite. He stressed the importance of establishing industries to harness these resources effectively. "I want to assure the people of Keonjhar that the steel plant would be established very soon," he stated during his three-day visit to the district.

Focus on Infrastructure and Development

The Chief Minister outlined his priorities for Keonjhar, focusing on infrastructure improvements such as road connectivity, drinking water supply, and advancements in health and education sectors. "My priority is the overall development of the district... developing road connectivity, drinking water supply, health and education sectors," he said.

Majhi remains hopeful about signing the MoU at the upcoming business conclave. "Discussions are continuing... I am hopeful that I will succeed in this matter signing of the MoU," he mentioned. The establishment of a steel plant is seen as a significant step towards economic growth in Keonjhar.

Previous Plans and Collaborations

In November, Majhi revealed plans for a joint venture between JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO to build a greenfield steel facility in Keonjhar. This collaboration aims to leverage the district's mineral wealth for industrial development.

Previously, under the former BJD government, ArcelorMittal had proposed a 12 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) steel plant in Keonjhar. However, this project was abandoned due to local protests. The current initiative seeks to revive industrial prospects in the region.

The Chief Minister's visit underscores his dedication to advancing Keonjhar's economic landscape through strategic industrial projects. The potential establishment of a steel plant is expected to bring significant benefits to the district and its residents.
