As per the 10th edition of Hurun Global Rich List 2021 released on Tuesday, in the pandemic year 2020, on a weekly basis, the world added 8 billionaires and on a yearly basis, the number of billionaires increased by 421, taking the total tally to 3,288.

During the period, wealth of the billionaires combined soared to $14.7 billion, surging as much as 32 percent.
"Billionaires have added in the past year the equivalent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Germany to take their wealth to the equivalent of China. They added $3.5 trillion to take their total wealth to $14.7 trillion, a huge concentration of economic power," the report said. The list ranked as many as 3228 billionaires from 68 countries and 2402 entities.
Topping the list is Tesla's Elon Musk whose wealth during the period increased by $151 billion to $197 billion. A stock market boom, driven partly by quantitative easing, and flurry of new listings have minted eight new dollar billionaires a week for the past year," said Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun Report chairman and chief researcher.
"At this rate, expect to see 50 or more break through the $100 billion mark within the next five years," Hoogewerf said.
Country-wise, China leads with the most number of billionaires at 1058, followed by the US (696), India (177), Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland at over 100 each.
Other Indians who made it to the list include Gautam Adani, Shiv Nadar. Lakshmi Mitta and Cyrus Poonawala.
