Heavy rains in Mumbai on Sunday led to the cancellation of 36 flights at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The downpour caused low visibility, forcing the airport operator to suspend runway operations twice within an hour, according to sources. Both budget and full-service airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara, were affected.

Flight Cancellations and Diversions
The source revealed that 18 arrivals and 18 departures were cancelled due to the weather conditions. IndiGo had the highest number of cancellations with 24 flights, including 12 departures. Air India cancelled eight flights, four of which were departures. Vistara also cancelled four flights. Additionally, at least 15 flights were diverted to nearby airports like Ahmedabad until 4 pm.
Impact on Road and Rail Services
The heavy rainfall not only disrupted flight operations but also affected road and rail services across Mumbai. Many roads were flooded, and tracks on the Harbour line of the Central Railway were inundated in some areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that the city received 82 mm of rain, while the eastern suburbs got 96 mm and the western suburbs received 90 mm by 4 pm.
Runway operations were first halted for eight minutes at 12:12 pm and then again from 1 pm to 1:15 pm due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions. This temporary suspension was necessary to ensure safety amid the challenging weather.
The continuous heavy spells of rain caused significant disruptions in Mumbai's transportation network. The flooding on roads made commuting difficult for residents, while the inundation of railway tracks led to delays and cancellations in train services.
Despite these challenges, airport authorities worked diligently to manage the situation. They coordinated with airlines to minimise inconvenience for passengers and ensured that diverted flights landed safely at alternative airports.
The weather forecast indicates that intermittent heavy rains are likely to continue in Mumbai. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated on weather conditions and plan their travel accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
The situation highlights the need for robust infrastructure and contingency plans to handle such weather-related disruptions effectively. Ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority for both airlines and airport operators during adverse weather conditions.
Mumbai's resilience is evident as authorities and residents adapt to these challenges. Continuous efforts are being made to restore normalcy in flight operations and other transportation services as soon as possible.
The heavy rains serve as a reminder of the city's vulnerability to weather extremes. It underscores the importance of preparedness and timely response in mitigating the impact of such natural events on daily life.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. They are taking necessary measures to address any further disruptions caused by the ongoing heavy rains in Mumbai.
Efforts are underway to clear flooded roads and railway tracks. This aims to restore normalcy in transportation services across the city at the earliest opportunity.
The cooperation between various agencies is crucial in managing such situations effectively. It ensures minimal disruption to daily life while prioritising safety for all residents and travellers in Mumbai.
Mumbai's ability to bounce back from such challenges is commendable. The city's spirit remains unbroken despite facing severe weather conditions frequently.
Authorities urge residents to remain cautious during this period of heavy rainfall. Staying informed about weather updates can help in planning travel better and avoiding unnecessary risks.
The city's infrastructure is being continuously upgraded. This aims to better handle such weather-related disruptions in future, ensuring smoother operations during adverse conditions.
Mumbai continues its efforts towards resilience against natural calamities. The focus remains on improving infrastructure and response mechanisms for better handling of such situations in future.
