47% of Mumbai Bus Commuters Opt for Digital Booking Via City Travel Apps

Bus commuters in Mumbai are increasingly opting for digital bookings, with around 47% of respondents in a recent survey indicating they now use city travel bus apps. The survey, conducted by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Grant Thornton, highlights this shift towards digital convenience.

Digital Shift in Mumbai Bus Bookings

The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) has been a key player in this digital transformation. Their live tracking app, Chalo, has seen over six million downloads within two years of its launch. This app allows users to track buses in real-time, enhancing the commuting experience.

Survey Insights on Digital Commuting

The survey involved over 1,400 participants and revealed that nearly half of the bus commuters in Mumbai now use city travel apps for booking their trips. This trend underscores the growing preference for digital solutions among urban commuters.

According to the survey, 26% of respondents highlighted the ease of using online platforms for city travel bookings. Additionally, 27% appreciated the real-time seat availability feature offered by these apps. Accurate real-time bus tracking was valued by 21% of the participants.

Benefits and Challenges

Despite some concerns about convenience fees and app performance, a significant portion of respondents reported positive experiences with city travel apps. Personalised tariff options were sought by 12% of the respondents, indicating a demand for more tailored services.

The survey's findings are detailed in an insight paper titled "Connected Commutes 2024." This paper emphasises the crucial role online platforms play in transforming urban mobility in Mumbai. It showcases how bus travel apps contribute to sustainable urban development and efficient city commuting.

Future Prospects

Dhruv Chopra, Co-founder of Chalo Mobility Pvt Ltd and member of the TravelTech Committee of IAMAI, stated, "By fostering strategic partnerships and driving continuous innovation, these apps are poised to significantly improve urban mobility, making public transportation a more practical, sustainable, and hopefully a default choice for millions."

The increasing adoption of digital booking platforms is expected to enhance public transportation's efficiency and eco-friendliness. As more commuters turn to these apps, the overall urban mobility landscape in Mumbai is likely to see substantial improvements.

This shift towards digital solutions not only benefits commuters but also contributes to reducing traffic congestion and pollution. By making public transport more accessible and convenient, these apps play a vital role in promoting sustainable urban living.
