Mumbai Loses Top Spot as Asia's Billionaire Capital in Hurun Global Rich List 2025

Mumbai, the financial capital of India continued its position as the nation's wealthiest city this year as well. The city is home to 90 billionaires. However, for the first time, it has lost its title as Asia's billionaire capital in the Hurun Global Rich List 2025, with Shanghai surpassing it to claim the top spot in the continent.

According to the Hurun Global Rich list, New York is the world's billionaire capital for the second year in a row, with 129 billionaires, ten more than the previous year, followed by London with 97. Shanghai surpassed Mumbai to become Asia's billionaire capital for the first time, with 92 billionaires. Mumbai has 90 billionaires, two fewer than the year before.

Mumbai added 11 new entrants more than London and Beijing which added seven and eight new billionaires respectively. The switch from Mumbai to Shanghai suggests that wealth patterns are changing across Asia. Mumbai gets another competitor while Shanghai's rise demonstrates China's increasing economic power.


India Added 13 New Billionaires

India ranked third after the US and China in the Hurun's Global Rich list 2025. India added 13 new billionaires this year, bringing the total to 284. The combined wealth of Indian billionaires stands at Rs 98 trillion. It is about one-third of India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is more than the entire GDP of middle east country, Saudi Arabia. Of these 284 individuals, 175 saw their wealth rise, while 109 experienced it decline or remain flat.
