Mumbai Milk Price Hike: Rate To Rise By Rs 9/Litre From September 1; Check How Much More Consumers Will Pay

Mumbaikars are going to get hit very hard by inflation right before the festive season kicks in, as the wholesale price of fresh buffalo milk in the city is going to rise by Rs 9 per litre from September 1st.

Mumbai Milk Price Hike Details

The Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) has decided to raise the bulk price of fresh buffalo milk from Rs 93 to Rs 102 per litre.
As per the association, the revised rate, which is sold through over 3,000 retailers across the city, will be in force for the next six months, till February 28th, after which it will be reviewed again.

MMPA Chairman C. K. Singh said the hike is the steepest one-time increase in the association's 70-year history. It comes roughly six months after the last revision, when prices were raised by Rs. 2 per litre from Rs 91 to Rs 93 per litre in February 2026.

Sharp Rise Before The Festive Demand

The timing could not be worse for consumers. Milk demand typically rises 35-40% during the festive and wedding season, because of the preparation of sweets, milk-based drinks and desserts at homes, banquet halls and commercial restaurant kitchen. So now a sharp milk price bill now be added to an already cost-heavy season for households.

The hike isn't just for Mumbai city-specific since Industry estimates point to a broader supply-side squeeze across the dairy sector fo India. As per CRISIL report projects, raw milk production growth in the country slowed to around 4% in FY26, down from an average of about 5% between FY20 and FY25. Slower output growth along with rising input costs, could keep pressure on milk and dairy product prices going forward, extending beyond Mumbai to other parts of Maharashtra as well.

For now, the immediate impact will be felt at the city's tea stalls, sweet shops, and household kitchens, as the higher wholesale rate works its way down to what consumers actually pay at the counter from September 1.
