Mumbai Monsoon: Orange Alert Issued; IMD Predicts Extreme Heavy Rains, High Tide; Are Schools, Colleges Open?

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on June 30, 2026, as an intense to very intense downpour has brought the much-needed relief to Mumbaikars. This has also led to heavy traffic jams, commuter slowdowns, and knee-deep waterlogging in several areas. The probability of high tide is expected on both Tuesday and Wednesday. That being said, IMD issued an orange alert for the city on July 1, signaling the continuation of heavy to very heavy rains. However, are schools, colleges, banks or offices open?

Mumbai Rains On July 1:

IMD issued an orange alert for this day. It is expecting cloudy sky with heavy rain in city & suburbs. Possibility of thunderstorm at isolated places. Maximum & Minimum temperatures likely to be around 30 deg. C. and 23 deg. C.

"We expect moderate to heavy showers to continue across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and adjoining areas until at least July 5 or 6. Persistent cloud cover and regular rainfall will keep daytime temperatures below normal, making the weather pleasant. However, spells of intense rain may trigger waterlogging, flash floods in low-lying areas, traffic congestion, and disruptions to daily life," said a note of Skymet Weather.

The note explained that the renewed rainfall comes as a major relief for Mumbai, which had been facing concerns over water availability. The prolonged dry spell after the monsoon onset had slowed the replenishment of the city's reservoirs, forcing authorities to impose water supply rationing in several areas. The upcoming widespread rainfall is expected to significantly improve reservoir storage levels and ease water scarcity.

Mumbai Rains: Are Schools & Colleges Opened Or Closed?

As of now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or district administration have made no official statement regarding the closure of schools, colleges or offices on June 30 to July 2nd. But parents and teachers are reportedly being cautious.

Mumbai Monsoon Outlook For July & August

As per Skymet, July and August are climatologically the wettest months for Mumbai. During this period, the city often experiences one or two episodes of extremely heavy rainfall that lead to widespread flooding and severe traffic disruptions. Similar conditions may develop around July 5 and 6 as a low-pressure area is expected to move from South Madhya Pradesh towards North Konkan and Goa, enhancing rainfall activity over the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

It added, residents are advised to remain updated with the latest weather forecasts and exercise caution while travelling during periods of heavy rainfall. We at Skymet are closely monitoring the evolving weather system and will continue to provide timely updates as the situation develops.
