Waterfront redevelopment plans discussed by Mumbai Port Authority and Japans Urban Renaissance Agency

Mumbai Port Authority said Japans Urban Renaissance Agency has shown interest in supporting development projects. Talks in Japan between Chairman M Angamuthu and Director General Takehiro Umezu covered the Ports Vision 2047 Master Plan, waterfront redevelopment, port-city integration, integrated mobility planning, and the use of Japanese best practices for sustainable port-linked areas.

Japan’s Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) expressed interest in backing Mumbai Port Authority projects. The support may cover waterfront redevelopment, port-city integration and mobility planning. The port operator said this aligns with its long-term plans for port-linked areas. The update was shared by the state-owned authority on Thursday.

Mumbai port talks with Japan UR

Mumbai Port Authority Chairman M Angamuthu and UR Director General Takehiro Umezu met in Japan on Wednesday. The talks explored collaboration under the Ports Vision 2047 Master Plan. The port operator said the meeting also looked at future waterfront development initiatives. Both sides discussed possible areas where UR could contribute.

The discussions centred on waterfront redevelopment and port-city planning. The statement also noted a focus on integrated mobility and Japanese urban development practices. UR works on urban regeneration, waterfront projects and integrated city planning. UR showed interest in supporting urban design and sustainable development for areas linked to the port.

Mumbai Port Authority mobility planning and Metro Line 11 stations

Future mobility inside Mumbai Port Authority areas also formed part of the talks. The statement referred to possible integration of four proposed Metro Line 11 stations. These stations are planned in and around Sewri. The aim discussed was better movement links between port areas and surrounding city zones.

Angamuthu said Japanese experience could guide planned redevelopment and waterfront change. "Japans experience in planned urban redevelopment and waterfront transformation offers valuable insights. Such exchanges help us evaluate global best practices that can enhance port efficiency, improve public access to waterfronts, and contribute to Mumbais future development,\" Angamuthu said.

The statement said UR also showed interest in acting as a knowledge and design-planning partner. It added that a wider partnership could include the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The possible work would relate to planning support and infrastructure development linked to the port’s future programmes.
