Mumbai Rains: BMC Declares Schools Holiday In Mumbai On July 6 As IMD Issues Red Alert For Heavy Rainfall

Mumbai's monsoon has turned into a full-blown crisis this week, with the India Meteorological Department putting the city under a Red Alert that has now been extended till July 7.

The city received 588mm of unstoppable rainfall in just the last four days. Due to which, some of the major flood prone areas in Mumbai have submerged once again which has also caused disrupting flight operations at its international airport.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister himself appealed to citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Schools Holiday In Mumbai

Alongside that, The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC has announced a school holiday in Mumbai today on July 6 after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for the city, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with super speed winds.

As a precautionary measure, all government, private, aided, unaided, municipal schools and colleges across Mumbai will be closed on Monday for the safety of students and staff during the deteriorating weather conditions.

The weather in mumbai city is worsening with back to back rainfall everyday. IMD has forecast another spell of high intensity monsoon showers that could cause huge difficulty and transportation and daily life which residents have already started to face.

Are Schools Open Or Closed In Mumbai Today?

No. Schools and colleges across Mumbai are closed today, July 6, after the BMC's official Advisory which announced closure for Government schools, Municipal schools, Private schools, Aided and unaided educational institutions and Colleges across Mumbai

As per BMC' official post on X, Authorities said the decision was taken purely as a precaution after weather forecasts predicted heavy rainfall across the city.

IMD Issues Red & Orange Alert For Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai weather under a Red and some areas under Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms in isolated areas, and winds over the next several hours.

According to the weather department, the city could face intense monsoon activity, which may increase the chances of waterlogging in low-lying areas, Traffic congestion. Another big impact could be in the delays in suburban train and road transport.

Due to continuous rainfall there has already been an almost annual ritual, the same low-lying pockets of the city bearing the brunt of the waterlogging this week. Hindmata junction in Sion, the Andheri Subway, King's Circle, Chunabhatti, Masjid Bunder, Parel and Dadar are some of the famous areas in Mumbai which are perennial flood hotspots, and all of them flooded again this week, alongside Charkop, Worli, Goregaon, Borivali and Santacruz.

The Andheri Subway was shut to traffic altogether after nearly two feet of water accumulated on the road, with Mumbai Traffic Police issuing an advisory asking commuters to avoid the stretch. Apart from these regions, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region was also impacted with Bhiwandi in Thane district saw knee-deep waterlogging in its Teen Batti and Nizampura market areas, water even entered shops, and a truck overturned near Kharghar Toll Plaza on the Sion-Panvel Highway as per a local reports.

BMC Issues Advisory To Residents

Along with declaring a school holiday in Mumbai, the BMC has requested citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and leave their homes only if absolutely necessary.

The civic body warned that heavy rainfall may affect normal life across Mumbai, with the possibility of disruptions to road traffic, local train services and other public transport.

People living in flood-prone and low-lying areas have also been asked to stay alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The BMC has deployed around 10,000 staff across the city to manage emergencies as the rainfall continues.
