Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert; Schools & Colleges Holiday On July 7; 250 Flights Delayed & Cancelled

Mumbai will continue to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall even on July 7, 2026, with IMD issuing an 'Orange Alert' for the city. Accordingly, BMC has declared a holiday for all government, private and municipal schools and colleges on Tuesday. BMC appeals to citizens to avoid venturing out if not urgent. While airlines continue to face disruption at Mumbai airports, and have asked passengers to check flight status before leaving home. Nearly 250 flights have been delayed or cancelled since yesterday to early morning of July 7.

Mumbai Rains Today

BMC said that IMD has issued an Orange alert warning along with gusty winds for July 7th, 2026, for Mumbai.

It appealed to citizens to avoid venturing out if not urgent.

As per BMC data, Veer Savarkar Marg Municipal School, Bhandup, received the most rainfall of 143.2 mm on July 6th between 8am to 6pm, followed by Chincholi Fire Station with 109.8 mm of rains. Places like Vikroli West, Ghatkopar, S Ward Office, Versova WWTF & Lagoons, Goregaon, Aarey Colony and HBT Trauma Hospital recorded between 90 mm to 100 mm of rainfall yesterday.

Also, BMC received at least 291 complaints of trees and branches falling till 6pm, of which 74 complaints were in Mumbai city, 78 in eastern suburbs and the highest number of complaints came from western suburbs up to 139.

July 6's heavy rains impacted all three traveling routes. After landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala stretch of the Bhor Ghat section, Mumbai-to-Pune routes were suspended.

Trains that were impacted due to the blockage in the ghat section. Central Railway had to cancel, divert, regulate, and reschedule several train services. The affected trains include multiple CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express and Pune-CSMT Indrayani Express services, Intercity trains between CSMT and Pune, and the Solapur Intercity Express operating in both directions. Prominent long-distance trains such as the Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express, and Sinhagad Express have also been impacted. In addition, the CSMT-Dhule Express service has been affected by the disruption.

Additionally, hundreds of flights were impacted as well. Due to extreme rains, in the early hours of July 6th, at least 17 flights were cancelled and a whopping 217 flights were delayed across arrivals and departures. Akasa, Indigo, SpiceJet, and Air India all have warned about flight disruptions due to the weather severity in Mumbai, Pune and Goa.

Mumbai Rains: Are Schools & Colleges Closed On July 7?

BMC has said, "In view of this, all Government, Municipal and Private schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared a holiday for 7 July 2026, for safety of the students."

Also, schools are closed in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar due to heavy rains.

Till July 8th, IMD is predicting intermittent spells of rain in the city and suburbs. Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching 60-70 Kmph very likely. Maximum & Minimum temperatures likely to be around 28 deg. C. and 25 deg. C.
