Mumbai Rains Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert On August 12, Warns Of Heavy Rainfall; Are Schools, Colleges Shut?

Heavy rains returned to Mumbai, with the suburbs of the city recording over 2,000 mm of rainfall since the beginning of the monsoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained its 'Yellow Alert' on Mumbai for August 12, while some areas will receive moderate rains, but heavy rains could lash in isolated regions. Amidst this, are schools and colleges closed or open on Wednesday?

Mumbai Rains Alert:

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's data, a total of 43.8 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Santacruz observatory, which represents the western suburbs. This was between 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on August 11th. While the Colaba Observatory, representing the south Mumbai, aka island city, witnessed 24.4 mm of rain during this period. Overall, 30.12 mm of rains were recorded near the island regions of Mumbai in south, while eastern and western suburbs recorded 44.45 mm and 53.82 mm of rains.

Following the intense spell, the Santacruz station has stored 2020 mm of rainfall since the onset of the monsoon from June 1 to August 11, 2026. As per the IMD's average of 20 years, Santacruz station alone accounts for 85% of the monsoon's total average rainfall of 2,390.5 mm of past 20-years, which is usually received between June to September. Further, the Colaba station registered at least 1,675.8 mm of rainfall, accounting for 80% of the total average rainfall of 2,102 mm.

Also, since the beginning of the monsoon in 2026, BMC's report revealed that the upper Vaitarna lake has witnessed 3,252 mm of rainfall, while the Modak Sagar and Tansa lakes recorded 2,739 mm and 2,543 mm of rain. These reservoirs supply water to Mumbai.

Mumbai Rains Forecast On August 12:

IMD has assigned a Yellow Alert on August 12, which began at 10:47 am and will end on 1:00 pm.

For August 12, IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in the city and suburbs. Possibility of occasional intense spells during morning hours. Maximum & minimum temperatures are likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius.

Mumbai Rains: Are Schools & Colleges Closed?

Overall, IMD has predicted heavy downpours to continue in places of Maharashtra till August 17. On the alert are --- Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ratnagiri, and Malvan.

However, a yellow alert is not entirely alarming; it could disrupt the momentum of commuters. Typically, BMC or other regions' school authorities declare a holiday when there is a red alert or prediction of extremely heavy rainfall that could lead to immense waterlogging or damage to infrastructure.

Hence, as of now, there are no instructions from authorities to keep schools and colleges shut on Wednesday, August 12 as the monsoon is likely to be moderate.
