In August, mutual funds poured over Rs 6,900 crore into eight IPOs. This month marked the largest primary market fundraising since May 2022, with ten companies collectively raising Rs 17,000 crore. Most of these investments were made through anchor investments in public issues.
Brainbees Solutions attracted the most significant investment from mutual funds, with 4.21 crore shares valued at Rs 2,810 crore. Ola Electric Mobility followed closely with 23.32 crore shares worth Rs 2,703 crore. Premier Energies received an investment of 1.38 crore shares amounting to Rs 622 crore.

Mutual Fund Strategies and Market Trends
Prashant Tapse from Mehta Equities explained that mutual funds are investing heavily due to a steady inflow of money. With limited options available, they turn to secondary or primary markets for opportunities. The current IPO market offers a chance to generate additional alpha for investors by participating through the anchor route for confirmed allotments.
This trend is likely to persist as long as the primary markets remain appealing to both investors and fund managers, according to Tapse.
Key Players in Recent IPOs
SBI Mutual Fund was the top investor in Brainbees Solutions' IPO, contributing Rs 1,880 crore. Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund followed with investments of Rs 299 crore and Rs 232 crore respectively.
In Ola Electric's IPO, Mirae Asset Management Mutual Fund led with an investment of Rs 849 crore. SBI Mutual Fund and HDFC Mutual Fund invested Rs 497 crore and Rs 480 crore respectively.
Listing Gains and Market Performance
The recent IPOs have delivered notable listing gains for mutual funds. Ola Electric surged by 20% on its debut day and is currently trading at a price that is 45% above its issue price. Brainbees Solutions saw a jump of 46% on its first day.
Unicommerce eSolutions soared by an impressive 95%, while Interarch Building Products and Orient Technologies rose by 33% and 48% respectively on their debut days. Premier Energies skyrocketed by a remarkable 98%, and ECOS India Mobility gained by 33% upon listing.
Investment Perspectives
Paras Matalia from SAMCO Mutual Fund believes that mutual funds invest in IPOs to create value for investors through potential gains. While grey market premiums can trigger herd mentality among short-term investors, mutual funds focus on mainboard IPOs due to stricter governance standards and quality assurance.
Matalia noted that although the current IPO surge seems exuberant, a cautious approach is necessary. Mutual funds aim to benefit from both listing day gains and potential long-term growth of new companies as long as there is value and growth potential.
Meanwhile, foreign investors also participated significantly in August's IPOs, investing around Rs 12,000 crore according to NSDL data.
