Myntra Refund Scam 2024: Company Reportedly Loses Rs. 50 Crores Nationwide to False Refund Orders

Fraudulent activities targeting e-commerce platforms have become an unfortunate trend in recent years. Major online shopping giants, including Amazon, Flipkart, and others, have been hit by scams exploiting system glitches or lapses in verification. The latest victim of such a scam is Myntra, which has reportedly lost a massive Rs.50 crore nationwide due to a series of fraudulent refund claims.

The Fraudulent Activities Uncovered

According to reports from Times Of India, Myntra became a target of a scam that initially surfaced in Bengaluru with a scam of 1.1 crores in March and June of 2024. Fraudsters reportedly took advantage of the platform's refund policies to claim full refunds on items they never returned or, in some cases, never even received. Myntra was forced to lodge a formal complaint with the Bengaluru Police to investigate this growing issue, which has now been linked to a larger nationwide scam with an estimated loss of Rs.50 crore.

The perpetrators behind this scam operated from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The police have uncovered that a gang would place large orders for branded apparel on Myntra's website. Once they received the goods, they would claim that only a few items were delivered, while the rest were "missing." This allowed them to request full refunds for the supposed undelivered items, even though no products were actually missing. In some cases, the fraudsters claimed that the products were fake or mismatched to justify the refund claims.

How the Scam Was Executed

The fraudulent gang had a specific modus operandi. They would choose delivery addresses at smaller, low-profile locations such as tea joints, small shops, or provisional stores in Bengaluru. These locations were less likely to raise suspicion and made it easier for the criminals to collect the products after the fraudulent claims were processed. According to Myntra officers, about 5,529 fake orders were delivered to various locations across the city of Bengaluru alone, highlighting the scale and coordination behind this scam.

A Myntra officer quoted by Mint revealed that the fraud was so extensive that the gang had targeted various cities, using multiple fake identities and addresses. This allowed them to bypass Myntra's standard verification processes and accumulate substantial refunds from the company.

Wider E-commerce Fraud in India

Unfortunately, Myntra is not the only e-commerce platform falling victim to these types of frauds. Reports indicate that other platforms such as Meesho have also been affected by similar scams. Meesho, for instance, reported a loss of ₹5.5 crore due to fake and fraudulent orders in the country.

E-commerce platforms have long faced challenges with fraudsters exploiting return and refund policies. These scams often involve creating false claims of defective or undelivered items, making it difficult for the company to differentiate between genuine returns and fraudulent activities. As e-commerce platforms become more integral to the daily shopping habits of consumers, these frauds are expected to increase, posing serious financial and operational risks to businesses.
