Nabard Approves 127 Projects Worth Rs 903 Crore for Himachal Pradesh Development

The Himachal Pradesh government has received approval from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) for 127 projects valued at Rs 903.21 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, as announced by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. During a meeting with MLAs from various districts, including Kangra and Kullu, the focus was on setting priorities for the 2025-26 budget.

MLA-Priority Schemes and Development Projects

Among the approved projects are 50 MLA-priority schemes under the Public Works Department, costing Rs 412.75 crore, and 23 schemes under the Jal Shakti Vibhag, amounting to Rs 179.07 crore. These initiatives include a dairy processing plant in Kangra district and electric bus charging stations. The chief minister emphasised that the government is committed to equitable development across all constituencies.

In recent years, Nabard has sanctioned Rs 1,691 crore for 251 projects across assembly constituencies. This demonstrates a consistent effort towards balanced growth. However, BJP MLAs chose not to attend the meeting. Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur criticised the meeting's relevance, claiming that previous MLA suggestions have not been addressed.

Opposition's Concerns and Government's Response

Thakur alleged that funds meant for infrastructure are being diverted to pay salaries and pensions, which he claims is against regulations. He also pointed out delays in preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for BJP MLAs' priorities. Despite these criticisms, MLA priority meetings have been a routine practice for over three decades.

The government has allocated Rs 1,087.77 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for 2024-25, marking a 5.28% increase from last year. Over the next three years, new schemes will aim to strengthen the rural economy and create jobs for local youth.

Tourism and Anti-Drug Initiatives

Efforts are underway to enhance tourism in Himachal Pradesh, with a focus on religious and tea tourism. The state plans to study West Bengal's tea tourism model for potential implementation. Additionally, measures are being taken to combat drug-related issues in the state.

MLAs from various constituencies shared their priorities during the meeting. Participants included representatives from Indora, Dehra, Jawalamukhi, Palampur, Baijnath, Manali, Kullu, Arki, Nalagarh, Doon, Kasauli, Chamba, and Lahaul-Spiti districts.

The government's commitment to infrastructure development and rural economic growth remains strong despite opposition criticism. By focusing on tourism and addressing drug-related challenges, Himachal Pradesh aims to foster a more prosperous future for its residents.
