Nag Panchami is the Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of serpent god. The festival is falling on Monday, August 17th across most parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

The festival is observed on the Panchami Tithi, the fifth day of Shukla Paksha during the month of Shravan, and typically falls a day after Hariyali Teej.

Nag Panchami Tithi And Puja Muhurat

According to Drik Panchang New Delhi, the Panchami Tithi begins at 4:52 PM on August 16 and concludes at 5:00 PM on August 17.
The auspicious puja window for worship, as per Drikpanchang's calculations, runs from 5:51 AM to 8:29 AM on August 17, a duration of roughly 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Significance Of The Festival

The significance of Nag Panchami roots back to Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean, in which the serpent Vasuki served as the rope used by the gods and demons to churn the sea. When the churning released the deadly Halahala poison, which Lord Shiva consumed to save the universe, serpents are believed to have helped by absorbing the stray drops that spilled.

Nag Panchami is celebrated to honour this service along with praying for protection from snakebite and for family well-being.

Given this year's overlap with Sawan Somwar, many devotees are also expected to begin the day with Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva, offering water and raw milk to the Shivling as part of the combined observance.
