National Garden of American Heroes plan for West Potomac Park raises approval questions

President Donald Trump says the National Garden of American Heroes will be built in West Potomac Park near the National Mall, alongside major memorials and local sports fields. The proposal aims to mark America’s 250th anniversary with 250 statues, but it may prompt scrutiny over Washington’s standard approvals process for the monumental core.

President Donald Trump has said a statue park called the National Garden of American Heroes will be built in West Potomac Park. The plan could trigger a legal dispute over whether required approvals are being bypassed. The park sits beside the National Mall and is part of Washington’s highly controlled monumental core.

National Garden plan raises questions

In a Friday morning social media post, Trump named West Potomac Park as the site. The area includes the Korean War Veterans Memorial and several major memorials. Local sports groups also use fields and volleyball courts there. Trump called the location "a totally BARREN field of Prime Waterfront Real Estate along our Mighty Potomac River.\"

The garden is linked to America’s 250th anniversary, with sculptures planned for 250 notable Americans. Trump first discussed the project during Fourth of July events in 2020. Trump has presented it as an answer to protests that led to removals. Some removed monuments honoured slave owners and Confederate leaders.

In the final days of Trump’s first term, Trump signed an executive order listing 244 people for statues. The list included Ronald Reagan and Jackie Robinson. The project then stalled under President Joe Biden. Congress later set aside USD 40 million to buy statues named in Trump’s orders.

That funding may not meet standard requirements for large projects near the National Mall. Federal law often demands approvals from several planning and design bodies. The White House did not immediately reply to questions. Those questions included whether approvals were being sought and whether contracts were issued.

National Garden of American Heroes joins other Trump changes in Washington

Washington’s monumental core is tightly regulated to protect views and limit new building. Disputes over design, money, and reviews can drag on for years. The Dwight D Eisenhower Memorial is a recent example. It took 21 years after Congress approved it in 1999.

Trump and allies have shown limited patience for slow processes. Trump moved quickly this month to drain and repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump demolished the East Wing of the White House last year. That work aimed to make space for a new ballroom.

Trump’s name has been added to the facade of the Kennedy Centre. Trump plans to close the venue later this summer. The closure is expected to last two years for renovations. This step added to concerns about rapid changes to major public sites.

Workers also began early surveys for a triumphal arch Trump wants built. The proposed location sits between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Part of the area was fenced off during the work. Pink flags used as survey markers were placed in the grass.

National Garden of American Heroes amid East Potomac Park golf course plan

The Trump administration is also pursuing a major redesign of East Potomac Park. The plan would turn an open public golf course into what Trump called a US Open-caliber course. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum released a design plan on Thursday. Burgum said it would offer \"championship-quality golf at affordable, highly discounted rates.\"

The design plan gave limited detail on public access after construction. East Potomac Park is frequently used by runners and cyclists. The shift has raised questions about how much open space will remain. Many of the administration’s construction and overhaul efforts have faced litigation.
