Navi Mumbai International Airport Commences Commercial Flight Operations on Thursday

Navi Mumbai International Airport officially begins commercial operations, aimed at alleviating congestion at Mumbai's existing airport and enhancing regional capacity.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, promoted by the Adani Group, is set to begin commercial flight operations on Thursday. Initially envisioned in 1997 by Maharashtra's City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the airport's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. The inauguration took place on October 8 this year.

Navi Mumbai Airport Starts Commercial Flights

Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, has been at the forefront of developing this greenfield airport since 2021. The project progressed rapidly from construction to phased commercial operations, overcoming challenges like the pandemic. The airport's design draws inspiration from India's national flower, the lotus, integrating cultural identity with modern design and sustainability.

Operational Details and Initial Services

On its first day, the airport will see domestic flights operated by IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air. These airlines will connect the new facility to nine destinations across India. The private airport operator announced that there would be 15 scheduled departures on the opening day.

Initially, the airport will operate for 12 hours daily, from 8 am to 8 pm. It can manage up to 24 scheduled daily departures to 13 destinations and handle up to 10 aircraft movements per hour. This phased approach aims to gradually increase operational capacity.

Infrastructure and Future Expansion

The first phase of the airport has been constructed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore, covering an area of 1,160 hectares. It includes one terminal and one runway with an annual passenger handling capacity of 20 million. Upon completion of all five phases, the airport will cater to 90 million passengers annually and feature dedicated cargo terminals and multimodal connectivity.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle, is overseeing the development. The Adani Group holds a 74% stake in NMIAL, while CIDCO owns the remaining 26%. From February next year, operations are expected to expand progressively to round-the-clock services.

Impact on Mumbai's Aviation Capacity

The opening of NMIA provides a crucial new gateway for a region that has experienced congestion for over a decade. As part of a distributed aviation framework, NMIA supports Mumbai's transition to a multi-airport system aimed at enhancing capacity, operational resilience, and long-term scalability.

The new facility is anticipated to alleviate congestion at Mumbai International Airport significantly while boosting capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This expansion is expected to strengthen Mumbai's role as a global gateway and support long-term economic growth through increased aviation capacity.

Passenger Experience and Amenities

Passenger services from day one will include Digi Yatra-enabled contactless processing at designated touchpoints. Trained terminal staff will assist passengers across various areas such as kerbside, check-in, security, and boarding. Retail and food offerings have been curated with affordability and local relevance in mind.
