'I Broke The National Record, But Got Second'

While Neeraj Chopra created history by becoming the first Indian to achieve the historic feat, he was not the best performing athlete of the competition in Doha. One of his competitors, Germany's Julian Weber, stood first in the championship after breaking his own personal best record. Weber created a world record with a sensational throw of 91.06 metre.

Explaining his situation in Doha after the competition, Neeraj Chopra said, "It is a little bit bittersweet result. I am very happy for the 90m, but this second place - it actually happened to me also when I competed in Turku and in Stockholm. I threw 89.94 and I was always second. And also here. I broke the national record and got second."

The Olympic medallist had fouled his second attempt, undeviated by the loss he diverted all his strength, energy and focus in his third attempt and recorded his personal best after breaching the 90 metre mark.

Apart from Neeraj Chopra, Parul Chaudhary also created history with a national record in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase. Neeraj Chopra's previous personal best was 89.94 metre achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League two years back. Additionally, Neeraj Chopra has performed more than five attempts in the range of 89 metre.
