What Caused Nepal-Tibet Border Flood
Satellite imagery analysed by scientists suggests that a large block of glacier detached from the mountain and fell into the valley on August 26.
As per experts, the imagery appeared to show a glacier section breaking away in a relatively clean failure. He estimated the detached mass was about 2,000 feet wide and fell from an elevation of roughly 17,000 feet. "This is a big chunk of ice that is stored at high elevation in the mountain, with a huge amount of potential energy," said Simon Cook, a glaciologist at the University of Dundee.
The falling ice and rock entered the river system, creating a fast-moving mixture of water, ice, sediment and boulders that travelled downstream.

The initial seismic readings created uncertainty about the cause. The US Geological Survey initially reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in the area. It later determined that the seismic signal was generated by the landslide rather than a conventional earthquake.
The landslide was subsequently assessed at magnitude 5.2. Scientists are using the seismic data to determine the timing and scale of the mountain collapse.
Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has also said satellite images indicated that a landslide along the Nepal-China border may have caused the flooding.
