New FASTag Rule From February 17: Recharge Within 60 Minutes or Pay Double!

Starting Monday, February 17, 2025, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is introducing new rules for FASTag users that will directly impact how tolls are charged. If your FASTag does not have enough balance when you enter a toll plaza, you will now have just 60 minutes to recharge it. Failing to do so will result in a penalty: you will have to pay double the toll amount when exiting the toll plaza.

These new rules are brought into action to ensure faster toll payments and encourage users to keep their FASTag accounts sufficiently recharged at all times. Here are the changes explained in simple terms so you can avoid unnecessary penalties.

What is FasTag and Why is This Change Important?

FASTag is an automated toll-collecting system that came into effect in 2016 that allows vehicles to cross the toll plazas without stopping to pay with cash. It is linked to a prepaid account, and the toll amount is deducted automatically when you pass through a toll gate.

However, many people forget to maintain a balance in their FASTag account, which causes delays at toll plazas. These delays lead to traffic jams and unnecessary waiting times. To prevent this, NHAI has introduced a strict 60-minute rule that ensures users recharge their FASTag in time and keep the system running smoothly.

How the New FASTag Rules Work?

• Your FASTag must have enough balance when you enter a toll plaza.
• If your account does not have enough money, the system will allow you to pass but will mark your FASTag as low-balance.
• You will receive a notification via SMS or the FASTag app, reminding you to recharge your account within 60 minutes.

If you fail to recharge in time, you will have to pay twice the toll amount when you exit the highway.
This means if the actual toll fee is Rs. 100, and you don't recharge your FASTag within an hour, you will be charged Rs. 200 instead.

Why Is The New FASTag Rule Being Introduced?

NHAI has noticed that many drivers enter toll plazas without checking their FASTag balance. This creates issues where vehicles get stuck, blocking traffic for others. The new rule ensures that highways will be less congested. Also, if you maintain enough balance, you won't be penalized.

How to Avoid FASTag Penalties

• Always check your FASTag balance before starting your journey. You can do this through your FASTag provider's mobile app or website.
• Enable auto-recharge on your FASTag account so that it gets refilled automatically when the balance is low.
• Keep SMS notifications ON so you receive alerts about low balance.
• Recharge immediately if you get a low-balance alert while driving.
