The Oil Ministry on March 15 informed that LPG consumers in India are required to undergo Aadhaar-based e-KYC to continue receiving gas cylinders. However, this announcement birthed a lot of confusion among consumers, especially those who had already completed their e-KYC earlier.
To end all the ongoing discussions around LPG biometric Aadhaar authentication the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has now issued a clarification stating that the requirement is NOT MANDATORY for all LPG consumers. The government emphasized that this is "Not a New Directive", but part of ongoing efforts to improve LPG distribution in India.

e-KYC Required Only for Unauthenticated LPG Consumers
Amid confusion on new LPG Aadhaar e-KYC rule, the ministry stressed that only those LPG consumers who have not completed their e-KYC are required to do so. Consumers who have already completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication for LPG do not need to repeat the process.
For non-PMUY LPG customers, the rule is simple: once the e-KYC for LPG connection is completed, it remains valid and does not require repetition.
Special Rule for PMUY Beneficiaries
For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the rules are slightly different. These consumers are required to complete LPG Aadhaar e-KYC once every financial year, but only to continue receiving DBT LPG subsidy benefits.
The ministry clarified that this annual verification applies specifically for targeted subsidy eligibility after multiple cylinder refills, typically after the 7th refill (8th and 9th refill cycle).
LPG Supply Will Not Be Affected
Importantly, the government assured that the supply of LPG cylinders will not be impacted in any case, even if the e-KYC is pending. This means that consumers will continue to receive LPG cylinder refills without disruption.
LPG Aadhaar e-KYC Can Be Done Easily From Home: Step-by-Step
The ministry also said that the LPG e-KYC process can be completed easily from home, free of cost, through official platforms provided by oil marketing companies. Here is a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Scan the QR code mentioned in the government notice or visit the official website: https://www.pmuy.gov.in/e-kyc.html
Step 2: Download your respective Oil Marketing Company's mobile app (IOCL, BPCL, or HPCL) along with the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
Step 3: Open the company app, follow the on-screen instructions, and complete the biometric verification by scanning your face using the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
Step 4: After successful verification, your LPG connection will be authenticated and updated in the system.
