India's National Highways Authority (NHAI) has taken a significant step towards modernizing toll collection across the country's vast network of National Highways. In a recent official announcement, NHAI revealed its plans to transition towards a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based electronic toll collection system. This initiative aims to eliminate physical toll booths, thereby offering a seamless and barrier-free tolling experience to commuters.

The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by NHAI, is spearheading this initiative. IHMCL has issued a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting innovative and qualified companies worldwide to develop and implement this advanced toll collection system. The integration of GNSS technology into India's tolling infrastructure is expected to enhance the efficiency and transparency of toll operations significantly.
NHAI's strategy includes incorporating the GNSS-based electronic toll collection (ETC) system within the existing FASTag ecosystem. Initially, a hybrid model will be employed, allowing both RFID-based ETC and GNSS-based ETC systems to operate concurrently. This approach ensures a smooth transition and minimal disruption to current toll collection processes.
Furthermore, dedicated GNSS lanes at toll plazas will enable vehicles equipped with GNSS-based ETC systems to pass through without stopping. This development is part of NHAI's broader objective to leverage advanced satellite technology for improving India's highway infrastructure.
The implementation of the GNSS-based ETC system is poised to revolutionize the way tolls are collected on National Highways. Among the anticipated benefits are barrier-less free-flow tolling, which promises a hassle-free riding experience for commuters. Additionally, the system will introduce distance-based tolling, ensuring that users are charged only for the specific stretches of the National Highway they use.
This innovative toll collection method is also expected to enhance revenue collection efficiency by minimizing leakages and deterring toll evasion. By adopting GNSS technology, NHAI aims to facilitate smoother vehicle movement along National Highways, marking a significant milestone in India's journey towards advanced transportation infrastructure.
The move by NHAI and IHMCL to invite global expertise in developing this system underscores India's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies for public infrastructure projects. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to observe how this technology transforms the everyday commute for millions of Indian highway users.
