NHAI Implements 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' Rule From April 1; All The Dos And Don'ts You Must Know

To streamline toll collection and curb misuse of FASTags, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has enforced the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' rule starting from April 1. This directive, confirmed by a senior NHAI official to the Press Trust of India (PTI), prohibits the use of a single FASTag across multiple vehicles or associating several FASTags with one vehicle.

NHAI's decision to implement this policy follows concerns over the misuse of FASTags. Reports highlighted instances where vehicles were equipped with multiple FASTags or issued FASTags without adhering to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. Improper affixing of FASTags to vehicle windshields also led to delays at toll plazas, inconveniencing users of National Highways, according to a Press Information Bureau release in January 2024.

The 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' principle ensures that each vehicle is associated with a single active FASTag. If a vehicle has multiple FASTags, all but the most recently acquired one will be deactivated. This measure aims to prevent the ownership of multiple FASTags for one vehicle. However, vehicle owners retain the flexibility to recharge their FASTags through any bank or various payment methods, including BBPS, UPI, and net banking.

To check the status of FASTags linked to their vehicles, users can follow these steps:
Visit the official website.
Input vehicle details.
Select "Submit."
Review the status information provided for each FASTag associated with the vehicle.
Notifications will be sent through email, SMS, or the bank's app if FASTag KYC is incomplete. Users can update their KYC for NHAI FASTags by visiting the official website and bank-issued FASTags through their respective issuing bank's portal.

It's crucial to note that FASTags are uniquely issued to vehicles based on their registration certificate. Misuse, such as using a tag intended for one vehicle on another, can lead to blacklisting, preventing further issuance of FASTags for the vehicle.

For non-KYC wallets, failure to upgrade KYC within two years will restrict the addition of funds. However, users can still utilize the remaining balance for toll payments until the tag shows a low balance or is blocked.

The processing time for KYC requests is up to seven working days, with approval contingent on the accuracy and validity of submitted documents. Discrepancies or invalid documents will result in rejection, necessitating resubmission.
