A government initiative aimed at fostering knowledge-based and technology-driven innovation has resulted in the creation of over 1,200 products and prototypes, along with the generation of 233 patents. The National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI), under the Department of Science and Technology, has supported 1,074 Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIR), leading to the establishment of 571 companies and the creation of 3,693 jobs, according to a report by S&T Secretary Abhay Karandikar.

Since its launch in 2016, NIDHI has significantly contributed to India's science and technology entrepreneurial landscape. It has played a vital role in nurturing technology startups, with a notable number led by women entrepreneurs. The programme aims to inspire top talents to become entrepreneurs by reducing the risks associated with startups and partially offsetting the opportunity costs of high-paying jobs.
Support for Women Innovators
Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted that through a network of over 180 incubation centres established by DST across India, women innovators are being supported in their journey to build successful tech-based startups. This support system is crucial for promoting gender diversity in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The NIDHI-EIR programme offers opportunities for innovative entrepreneurs to expand their networks and receive critical feedback on their ventures. This helps them achieve their entrepreneurial career goals and aspirations. These startups have achieved significant economic success, demonstrating the programme's impact on India's growth and self-reliance.
Economic Impact and Success Stories
The NIDHI scheme has led to the introduction of 1,288 products into the market. Notable examples include Atomberg energy-efficient fans and Ather electric bikes. These products reflect the programme's success in driving innovation and contributing to India's economic development.
Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) Programme is one of the key initiatives under NIDHI. It aims to inspire talented individuals to pursue entrepreneurship by minimising startup risks and partially offsetting their opportunity costs from high-paying jobs. This initiative has been instrumental in encouraging more people to take up entrepreneurial ventures.
The programme's impact is evident from the substantial economic success achieved by these startups. An official stated that these achievements reflect the programme's positive influence on India's growth and self-reliance. The support provided through NIDHI has been crucial in helping these startups thrive.
In conclusion, NIDHI's efforts have significantly bolstered India's entrepreneurial landscape, particularly in science and technology sectors. By supporting a diverse range of innovators, including many women entrepreneurs, the programme has fostered a culture of innovation and self-reliance. The economic successes of these startups underscore the importance of continued support for such initiatives.
