Global markets were on the tenterhook ahead of the outcome of the US Fed meeting, which are likely to keep stocks volatile during the course of the week.
The Japanese Nikkei. The Hong Kong's Hang and the Shanghai Composite all advanced in trade. The Sensex was trading with gains of 120 points, while the Nifty was higher by 45 points in early trade.
Shares in Alkem Labs were trading higher after reports that the drug maker said has launched a generic anti-epileptic drug in India to make epilepsy treatment more accessible and affordable.
Among the to gainers from the Nifty were Titan Industries, Adani Ports, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and Dr Reddy's Labs.
Metal stocks were seeing some selling pressure with Tata Steel and Hindalco among the top losers in trade. Among the other losers were Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank.
Meanwhile, gold prices continued to see an upward tick, while crude prices in India saw a drop.
