Nirmala Sitharaman Debuts In Forbes 2019 World's 100 Most Powerful Women List
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman debuts in the Forbes 2019 list of 'The World's 100 Most Powerful Women'. Besides 3 other Indian origin women including HCL's CEO and Executive Director Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and Landmark Group CEO Renuka Jagtiani have found their place in the list.
The list has been topped by Angela Merkel, Germany's Chancellor, while the second and third place have been bagged by Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB, and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, respectively. Notably Forbes 2019 list, including over seven generations of powerful women, for the first time in its history features 16-year old environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
On the list there were 23 newcomers and Nirmala Sitharaman was ranked the highest at 34th spot among the 4 Indian women. India's first women finance minister, Sitharaman also served as the defence minister.
Sitharaman is the first female to hold the portfolio full time. Before this, former prime minister Indira Gandhi briefly took the additional charge of the ministry.
Others who made it to the list include Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who was ranked 29th on the list.
As per Forbes, the list includes women from primarily six segments namely business, finance, technology, politics and policy, philanthropy and media and entertainment. And overall these influential women extend their command on over $2.3 trillion in revenue and administer as many as 6.5 million employees.
