NITI Aayog Forms Committee to Overhaul AIIMS for Enhanced Medical Research and Practice

NITI Aayog has initiated efforts to transform AIIMS, New Delhi, into a leading medical research and practice institution. A committee led by NITI Aayog member V K Paul is tasked with evaluating current systems at AIIMS and suggesting reforms with specific timelines for implementation, as outlined in the 2024-25 annual report.

The committee's responsibilities include improving patient inflow management, developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for clinical, academic, and research excellence, enhancing governance and transparency, and recommending financial strategies for AIIMS' sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Universal Health Coverage Strategies

NITI Aayog, in collaboration with CSEP Research Foundation, has explored strategies from various countries to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This initiative aims to provide insights and policy recommendations tailored to India's needs. UHC ensures access to quality health services without financial hardship.

The draft paper suggests multi-faceted approaches addressing both supply-side and demand-side financing to enhance healthcare delivery, accessibility, quality, and affordability. This ongoing work involves extensive consultations with the government and stakeholders to identify suitable pathways for India.

Progress in Healthcare Accessibility

India has transitioned from selective health service delivery to a comprehensive primary healthcare system integrated with secondary and tertiary care. The Ayushman Bharat scheme, launched in 2018, has significantly reduced financial burdens on families by providing healthcare coverage.

Recognising the high cost of imported drugs for rare diseases, NITI Aayog has worked to improve drug accessibility and affordability. Four indigenously manufactured drugs are now available at costs 1/60th to 1/100th of imported ones. Four more drugs are awaiting regulatory approval.

Efforts in Rare Disease Treatment

Efforts include fast-tracking the production of small molecules for selected rare diseases. For Sickle Cell Disease management, a syrup formulation of Hydroxyurea is under approval. These initiatives aim to make treatments more affordable for patients in India.

India's healthcare system has evolved significantly over the years. The focus on integrating primary care with advanced medical services has been crucial. Initiatives like Ayushman Bharat have played a vital role in reducing healthcare costs for families across the country.
