Hoshiarpur, Punjab - Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently emphasized the significance of hydrogen as the fuel of the future and urged Punjab to become an international hub for producing green hydrogen. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for 29 national highway projects worth Rs 4,000 crore in Punjab, Gadkari highlighted the potential of crop residue, such as wheat straw, paddy straw, and bagasse, in producing green hydrogen.
Green Hydrogen: A Sustainable Fuel Alternative
Gadkari explained that green hydrogen can be produced from crop residue, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to reduce the cost of producing 1 kg of hydrogen to below USD 1, making it a viable and cost-effective fuel source. By embracing green hydrogen, India can reduce its energy imports and transition towards becoming an energy exporter, contributing to the nation's economic growth and energy independence.
Punjab's Potential as a Green Hydrogen Hub
Recognizing Punjab's abundant stubble and biomass resources, Gadkari urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to position the state as an international hub for green hydrogen production. He envisioned hydrogen as a versatile fuel with applications in powering railway engines, airplanes, trucks, buses, and cars, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to conventional fuels.
Empowering Farmers as Energy Providers
Gadkari emphasized the need to empower farmers in Punjab as "Urjadaata" or energy providers. He discouraged the practice of stubble burning and introduced a groundbreaking technology that converts stubble into bitumen. A project in Haryana will demonstrate the conversion of one lakh tonne of paddy stubble into one lakh litres of ethanol and 150 tonnes of bitumen, showcasing the potential of stubble as a valuable resource.
Ethanol-Powered Vehicles and Infrastructure
The Union Minister also highlighted the emergence of ethanol-powered bikes and auto-rickshaws, offering eco-friendly transportation options. To support the adoption of ethanol as a fuel, Indian Oil plans to set up 300 ethanol pumps across the country, expanding the availability of this sustainable fuel.
Infrastructure Development as a National Priority
Gadkari reiterated the importance of infrastructure development as a top priority for the nation's progress. He emphasized that good infrastructure is essential for economic growth and prosperity, enabling efficient transportation, connectivity, and overall development of the country.
