Mohan Bhagwat Stresses Importance of Voluntary International Trade and Self-Reliance

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasised the importance of self-reliance, stating that international trade should be voluntary, not pressured. Speaking at a lecture series marking the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's centenary, Bhagwat highlighted self-reliance as a solution to various issues and advocated for prioritising indigenous products. He clarified that being self-reliant doesn't mean halting imports, as global interdependence necessitates continued export-import activities.

Bhagwat explained that swadeshi doesn't imply avoiding imports of goods that are already available or easily manufactured domestically. He noted that importing such goods can harm local vendors. Addressing diplomats, bureaucrats, ex-servicemen, scientists, thinkers, and NGO representatives, he stressed the need for policies driven by choice rather than compulsion. "Whatever is made in your country, there is no need to import it from outside," he stated.

Focus on Indigenous Products and Global Trade

On the same day, a 25% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on India's Russian oil purchases took effect. Bhagwat's remarks underscored the importance of voluntary policy-making in trade. He said, "Whatever is necessary for life and is not made in your country, we will import it from outside." Bhagwat also met with over 50 diplomats from more than two dozen countries to discuss these issues further.

Bhagwat warned against radicalism, wokeism, and unchecked consumerism. He suggested that Dharma offers solutions to modern challenges by respecting diversity and promoting balance. "Dharma respects diversity, including respect for the environment," he said. Bharat can provide solutions to these contemporary challenges faced globally.

Addressing Social Harmony and Character Building

The RSS chief outlined a five-point plan focusing on character-building, patriotism, and expanding RSS work across society. The Panch Parivartan agenda aims for a five-fold societal transformation: instilling Bharatiya values of selfhood, promoting Indian family values, fostering social harmony, encouraging eco-friendly lifestyles, and performing civic duties.

Bhagwat stressed the need to change mindsets regarding caste discrimination. "It is problematic if we think about someone's caste after seeing them," he said. He advocated for inclusivity in temples, water access, and crematoria. The RSS aims to reach every societal section and hopes other countries will develop similar organisations.

Expanding RSS Influence Globally

Bhagwat recalled training sessions by late RSS leader Laxmanrao Bhide. The first generation of volunteers organised Hindus abroad; the second generation kept them away from addiction and consumerism. The third generation should inspire host countries to establish organisations like the RSS. "Most of India's neighbouring regions were once part of India," he noted.

The RSS plans extensive public outreach during its centenary year with events like over one lakh Hindu Sammelans nationwide. Starting with Bhagwat's address at RSS headquarters in Nagpur on Vijay Dashmi (October 2), they aim to connect with people through a door-to-door programme.

Bhagwat emphasised expanding geographically to reach all societal levels—from those below the poverty line to those above it. "No individual of society should remain untouched," he said. The goal is to foster a sense of belonging among people in regions historically linked to India.
