No Livestream and DM on Instagram For Teens Under 16, Meta Expands Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger

Meta Platforms is introducing a new feature called "Teen Accounts" on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger on Tuesday. Social media users under 16 will not be able to livestream or unblur nudity in direct messages on Instagram unless they have parental consent. The changes will also apply to users under 18 on Facebook and Messenger. This move comes after continued criticism that the company hasn't done enough to protect young users from potential dangers online.

New Restrictions on Instagram for Teen Accounts

Meta in a statement, "We're introducing additional Instagram Teen Account protections, so teens under 16 won't be able to go Live or turn off our protections from unwanted images in DM without a parent's permission. We'll also begin making Teen Accounts available on Facebook and Messenger."

Meta is introducing new restrictions to enhance safety for teenagers on Instagram. Teens under 16 will not be able to go live on Instagram unless they have permission from their parents. Additionally, under 16 kids will need parental consent to disable the feature that automatically blurs images containing suspected nudity in direct messages (DMs). These measures aim to protect younger users from exposure to inappropriate content and give parents more control over their children's online activities.

The company said, "In addition to the existing built-in protections offered by Teen Accounts, we're adding new restrictions for Instagram Live and unwanted images in DMs. With these changes, teens under 16 will be prohibited from going Live unless their parents give them permission to do so. We'll also require teens under 16 to get parental permission to turn off our feature that blurs images containing suspected nudity in DMs."

According to the company, Instagram's improved privacy and parental controls, which were implemented last year, will address concerns about how teenagers are using social media.

The company added, "Last year, we reimagined the Instagram experience for teens - and their parents - by introducing Instagram Teen Accounts. Teen Accounts have built-in protections that limit who can contact teens and the content they see. We automatically place teens into Teen Accounts, and teens under 16 need a parent's permission to change any of these settings to be less strict."

Instagram's "Teen Accounts" feature has been very popular. About 97% of teens aged 13-15 have kept the safety settings on by default. Also, 94% of parents in the US think that this feature is helpful in keeping their children safe online.

As per Meta report, "Since making these changes, 97% of teens aged 13-15 have stayed in these built-in restrictions, which we believe offer the most age-appropriate experience for younger teens."

Since September 2024, at least 54 million teenagers worldwide have created Teen Accounts, according to Meta. The strongest content limits and automatic placing in private accounts are two examples of the improved protections that these teenagers now enjoy. Additionally, only those they follow or are already connected to can message them, and they have alerts off overnight and are reminded to exit the app after 60 minutes.

Reason Behind Meta's New Restrictions

The change occurred as the United Kingdom (UK) implemented its new Online Safety Act, which mandates that social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and others block offensive content like sexual abuse of children or materials about self-harm. If harmful stuff does show up, it needs to be taken down.

Additionally, the Act guarantees that platforms take precautions against hazardous information, including anything related to suicide, for children. According to the report, child safety organisations strongly disagreed with any potential weakening of the law in trade negotiations between the US and the UK.
