Emergency Alerts

The alert platform, made in India through collaboration between the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and NDMA, was launched in May 2026 and was expected to play a very important role in warning citizens about floods, cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning strikes, and other emergencies.

Why Has the Cell Broadcast Service Been Suspended?

According to an NDMA advisory issued on June 12, "the Cell Broadcast service has been suspended until further notice as a precautionary measure after certain issues were flagged by competent authorities."

While the government has not officially disclosed the exact reason behind the suspension, however, according to a report by The Hindu suggest the decision may have been taken after an emergency alert allegedly reached the Prime Minister's contact number around midnight.
Reports say that disaster alerts sent by authorities in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh caused mobile phones to emit loud warning sounds around midnight.

What Is the Cell Broadcast System?

The Cell Broadcast System is a modern emergency communication platform that allows authorities to send geo-targeted alerts to millions of mobile users simultaneously. These rae different from traditional SMS messages, Cell Broadcast alerts are delivered almost instantly and are not affected by network congestion during emergencies.

When an alert is issued, mobile phones in the affected area display a priority pop-up notification along with a loud warning tone.
The system is integrated with SACHET, India's homegrown alert platform developed by C-DOT, and follows the internationally recognised Common Alerting Protocol framework.

With the nationwide pause now in effect, users will not receive Cell Broadcast emergency warnings related to Floods, Cyclones, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Severe weather events, Public safety emergencies, Security-related threats.

The suspension is temporary, but until the service is restored, citizens will have to rely on other official communication channels for emergency information.
