A major Odisha bandh was called on Thursday, July 17, by eight opposition parties, led by the Congress. This complete statewide shutdown is in response to the recent traffic death of a 20-year-old student who set herself on fire after sexual harassment ignited massive outrage across the state.
Balasore student death case
Soumyashree Bisi, a second-year B.Ed student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, reportedly set herself ablaze on July 12 on her college campus. She suffered 90-95% burns and was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she died late on July 14. The trigger for her desperate action was the alleged failure of college authorities and the state apparatus to address her repeated complaints of sexual and mental harassment by a college faculty member.

Before taking the drastic step, Soumyashree is said to have reached out via formal complaints, social media messages to the Chief Minister, and appeals to local officials but allegedly received little support.
Aftermath and Political Fallout
Her death unleashed a wave of public fury, amplified by powerful statements from leading politicians. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called it "nothing less than a systematic murder," laying blame on systemic failures and demanding government accountability.
Congress' Odisha unit president, Bhakta Charan Das, demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, the Education Minister, the local MLA, and the MP, criticising them for failing Soumyashree and her family.
Left parties, the CPI, the Samajwadi Party, and the NCP are among those supporting the bandh, which they frame as a call for "justice and accountability" and for a strict judicial probe into the incident.
The Bandh has been called by eight opposition parties, including Congress, CPI(M), Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Nationalist Congress Party.
Actions Taken So FAR
Following the massive outcry, the accused faculty member has been arrested, and the principal of the college suspended for negligence and inaction.
The Odisha government announced a high-level inquiry and pledged to apply sterner legal sections in the case, including those for abetment to suicide and mental cruelty.
The National Commission for Women has demanded a detailed action-taken report from authorities.
What to Expect on July 17
With the bandh, major disruptions can be observed in
Schools, colleges, shops, markets, and transport services are likely to be shut down statewide.
Essential services are expected to remain operational; security has been tightened across Odisha to prevent possible issues.
Mass prayer meetings and candlelight rallies will be held in all districts to pay tribute to the deceased student
