International Participation and Cultural Exchange
The foreign diplomats were welcomed traditionally and taken to the Bali Jatra grounds on four boats named after Cuttack's major rivers: Mahanadi, Kathajodi, Birupa, and Debi. A senior district official mentioned that this boat ride aimed to provide them with an experience of ancient Odisha. The journey symbolises Odisha’s historic trade connections with Southeast Asia.Cultural troupes from Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Slovakia, Indonesia, and Bhutan will also participate in the event. This cultural exchange highlights the fair's international appeal and its role in fostering global connections through shared traditions.
Historical Significance and Modern Celebrations
In ancient times, Odisha's traders, known as 'Sadhabas', embarked on sea voyages to places like Bali, Java, and Sumatra in vessels called Boita. These journeys began from Kartika Purnima. To honour this historical trade legacy, Odisha celebrates the Bali Jatra fair in Cuttack annually. The fair spans over 20 acres with more than 2,500 temporary stalls. Officials stated that it will continue until November 22. The district administration and police have made extensive arrangements for the event. They anticipate a footfall exceeding 50 lakh people.
Facilities for Visitors
Special provisions have been arranged for senior citizens, women, and children at the fairgrounds. These measures ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees amidst the expected large crowds. The Bali Jatra not only celebrates Odisha’s rich maritime history but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and international diplomacy. The presence of diplomats from various countries underscores its importance on a global scale.
