One India, Many Flavours: Bihar's Sattu, Makhana To Odisha's Koraput Coffee Shine At BRICS 2026

The BRICS Summit 2026 is commencing on September 12, 2026, at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Leaders of 11 major emerging markets are coming together to discuss global trade and to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth. But amidst the high-profile leaders and world-changing discussions, the BRICS summit is also witnessing the flavors of India. The media kit, prepared for journalists attending the BRICS summit, tells a tale of a more culturally rich and diverse nation, right from food and beverages to handicrafts.

In the media kit, the journalists receive a media kit that includes Bihar's Sattu and Makhana, Odisha's Koraput coffee, and Gujarat's traditional handicraft.

Vasudev Ravi, OSD, Public Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, who was quoted by several media, said, "This is an opportunity for us to showcase the India Story and highlight aspects to our colleagues in the media as well as those who are joining us from the international press. So, we partnered with three state governments, and our effort has been to showcase traditional foods."

Bihar's Sattu & Makhana

Sattu origins from Bihar and has been a key traditional delicacy that is enjoyed for celebration or any occasion. As per Organic Mandya, Sattu is a high-protein flour made from dry-roasted Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum), barley, or a combination of grains and legumes that have been parched and stone-ground into a coarse powder.

Bihar is also rich in makhana, a type of seed that looks puffy and round. It can also be called fox nuts or lotus seeds. Approximately 90% of the world production of makhana comes from Bihar.

On the occasion of BRICS, Bihar's chief minister, Samrat Chaudhary, said, "The sattu and makhana included in the Welcome Kit at the Delhi BRICS Summit are emblems of our taste, tradition, and entrepreneurship."

"Bihar's pride on the global stage!" he said while expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who realized "Local To Global" resolve. The state's CM lastly added, "The new identity of a new Bihar—Bihar's flavors now before the world!"

The move to add Sattu and Makhana to BRICS media kit was also hailed by JDU national working president and MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, who said, "It's heartening to see Bihar's makhana along with our superfood sattu finding a place in the gift hampers for Indian and international journalists at the BRICS Summit in Delhi."

"A fine tribute to our farmers. From the fields of Bihar to a global platform, our makhana and sattu are showcasing the rich heritage and unique produce of the state to the world," Jha added.

Odisha's Koraput Coffee

As per the reports, the Ministry of External Affairs partnered with Odisha government to bring the rich and tempting aroma of coffees that are grown in the state's Koraput region to BRICS.

Gujarat's Block-Printed Stole

The media kit was not limited to foods and beverages, it also included a touch of craftsmanship as well. The block-printed stole which are popularly made in Gujarat, was also a unique and distinctive souvenir.

Ravi praised Gujarat's contribution to various kinds of handicrafts and hence the MEA decided to showcase the skills and craftsmanship of the state at BRICS as well through the souvenir.

Sangham

Apart from this, Ministry of External Affairs, official spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal said, "Inspired by the Indian concept of Sangam, where rivers from different origins meet and flow together, the artwork brings together artists and cultures from across BRICS in a celebration of friendship and unity in diversity."

"Inspired by India's BRICS Chairship 2026 theme, the artwork reflects resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability," he added.
