Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first parcel of crude oil from ONGCs Krishna Godavari deepwater project, marking a significant milestone in Indias energy sector. The project, located in Andhra offshore, is expected to boost the countrys oil and gas production by 7% at its peak.
In a significant development for India's energy sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the tanker Swarna Sindhu, carrying the first parcel of crude oil from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) recently commissioned Krishna Godavari (KG) deepwater project. This project is expected to make a substantial contribution to India's oil and gas production, marking a milestone in the country's energy landscape.

Boost to India's Oil and Gas Production
At its peak production, the KG deepwater project is poised to augment India's oil and gas production by an impressive 7 percent. This substantial increase will play a crucial role in reducing the nation's dependence on imported energy sources and enhancing its energy security. The project's commencement marks a significant step towards achieving India's goal of self-sufficiency in the energy sector.
Project Details and Production Capacity
Located in the Andhra offshore, ONGC's KG block KG-DWN-98/2 commenced oil production in January 2024. Currently, the field is producing approximately 12,000-12,500 barrels of oil per day, utilizing a floating production and storage offloading (FPSO) facility. The extracted oil is stored on the FPSO and periodically transferred to a ship for transportation to a coastal refinery, where it is processed into fuels such as petrol and diesel.
Shapoorji Pallonji's FPSO Armada Sterling V
The project employs Shapoorji Pallonji's FPSO Armada Sterling V, which is the largest floating installation ever deployed in the Indian subcontinent. This state-of-the-art FPSO boasts a processing capacity of over 50,000 barrels of oil per day and 3 million standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD) of gas. Additionally, it has a storage capacity of 7,00,000 barrels. The successful demonstration of the FPSO's robustness and reliability positions India as a key player in the global energy arena.
Additional Project Developments
During the event, Prime Minister Modi also dedicated several other significant projects to the nation. These include ONGC's Mumbai High North Oil Field Redevelopment Phase IV, Heera Redevelopment Phase-III, and phase-II development in Krishna Godavari Nagayalanka NELP Block. These projects, developed with an investment of over Rs 41,000 crore, represent India's commitment to enhancing its energy infrastructure and achieving energy independence.
The flagging off of the first crude oil parcel from ONGC's KG deepwater project marks a momentous occasion for India's energy sector. This project, along with other dedicated developments, signifies the nation's unwavering commitment to bolstering its energy production capabilities and reducing reliance on external sources. As India continues to strive for energy self-sufficiency, these initiatives pave the way for a more secure and sustainable energy future.
