Government to Study Online Gaming Addiction Among Youngsters
The Indian government is initiating a research study to address the rising concern of online gaming addiction among youngsters. The study aims to identify factors leading to excessive digital content consumption and develop mechanisms for prediction, alerts, and intervention.
Concerned about the growing problem of online gaming addiction among young people, the Indian government has announced plans to conduct a research study to better understand the issue and develop strategies to address it. The study will be piloted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and will involve collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore.

Understanding the Problem
The study aims to identify the factors that lead to excessive consumption of online content, particularly in the context of online gaming. It will also examine the potential negative consequences of online gaming addiction, such as social isolation, neglect of real-life responsibilities, and detrimental effects on mental and physical health.
Developing Coping Mechanisms
Based on the findings of the study, the government plans to develop a framework for predicting, alerting, and intervening with appropriate coping mechanisms to help individuals manage their online gaming habits. This framework will be designed to promote responsible digital consumption and minimize the risks associated with excessive online gaming.
Collaboration and Data Analysis
To ensure the effectiveness of the study, NIMHANS will collaborate with various organizations, institutions, and authorities to collect data on online gaming addiction. The data will be analyzed segment-wise, taking into account factors such as age groups and socio-economic strata of consumers. This will help in identifying existing interventions and coping mechanisms that can be leveraged to mitigate the progression to excessive consumption.
Promoting Healthy Digital Habits
In addition to developing coping mechanisms, the study will also focus on promoting healthy digital habits among young people. This will involve formulating mechanisms to encourage responsible use of technology and prevent excessive consumption of online content. The findings of the research will not only provide policy inputs for framing guidelines to protect the interests of consumers in online gaming but also offer valuable insights to the industry on how to ensure the optimum use of technology while minimizing potential risks.
The government's initiative to study online gaming addiction among youngsters is a timely and necessary step towards addressing a growing concern. By understanding the underlying factors and developing effective coping mechanisms, the government aims to promote responsible digital consumption and protect the well-being of young people in the digital age.
